His birth certificate reads J.W. (initials only). They standfor Jack William,
the two grandfathers. In theNavy, he needed a first name, so he wrote "Jay".

*Raych (as he was called) enjoyed traveling, basketball and English toffee
*ice cream.  He and Easter Belle grew up in the same neighborhood and went
*together for five years before they were married.  (He was 23, she was 18).
*They were married in her home.  They left Mountainberg Arkansas for Texas in
*1924.  Came to California in 1943.  He was a CARPENTER.
In the horse & buggy days, he tied his horse up once and it bit its bridle off

and ran away.  Raych & Belle had to follow the trail to find it--the buggy
went down a narrow path & the wheels were knocked off.  A blacksmith found
the horse, recognized it and tied it up for them. It cost three or four
dollars to have the blacksmith put the buggy back together again.

He didn't own a car until 1924 (he was 36 years old!) It was a Model T Ford.
He bought his first radio in 1937 (he was 49 years old!)

He had tuberculosis when he was a child but he didn't find out he had it
until World War I.

He didn't start school until he was 12 years old! In two months he was at the
third grade level. He continued until he reached the 8th grade when his
father made him quit because of ill health and the fear of his condition
worsening.  (His father was a hypochondriac and very superstitious --
characteristics he later developed himself.)

He used to go rabbit hunting and pole cat (skunk) hunting during the snowy
winters in Mountainberg. He had no boots so he used to wrap his shoes in
gunny sacks.  He called skunks "pole cats" because if you wanted to kill one
you had to have a long pole so they wouldn't spray on you.

Belle (as she was called) was born on Good Friday so her parents thought
"Easter" would be an appropriate name.  Her brother Wayne who was only 4 years
old at the time gave her the name Bell because that was his favorite toy.  He
carried his bell with him everywhere.
She only had a 7th grade education.  She enjoyed sewing, embroidery, patchwork
and crochet.  She made many quilts in her day and donated them to the sick and

needy.

One of the things that brought her the most satisfaction in life was
decorating the graves of loved ones.

She never worked for a salary in her life.  She was a homemaker and proud of
it. She was active in the neighborhood Baptist Church for 30 years.  She was a
member of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

She was a softspoken, gentle woman. Not aggressive, not a leader.  The few
friends she had were genuine and sincere, like herself.
