Isaac N. Bales, born March 5, 1837, in Randolph Co., IN, Washington Twp., the son of Pleasant and Mary (Abshire) Beals. Here he grew to manhood, received his education in the old time schools and devoted his life to general farming. He lived on the farm adjoining the land which our subject's parental grandfathter, Curtis Beals (b. 1779), tookup from the government, cleared and developed. Isaac N. Bales was married August 16, 1856, in Randolph Co., IN, to Martha Jane Platt, age 18 years, the ceremony officiated by John Johnson, and recorded in the first large book at the court house in Winchester, IN, the County Seat of Randolph Co., Mary Jane Platt was born March 16, 1838, in Wayne Co., Indiana. her father was Abraham C. Platt, born in New Jersey, and died in 1841, Wayne Co., Indfiana, and her mother was Eliza (Horner) Platt, born in Ohio, died in 1862, Wayne Co., Indiana. martha Jane Platt lived with her grandfather until she was 8 years old then lived with David and Martha Taylor, who were members of the Society of Friends.
Isaac N. Bales was a soldier in the Civil War, enlisting August 5, 1862, with Co. "E" 69th Indiana Reg. Vol. Infantry, to serve three years, seeing service and proving to be a gallant soldier for the Union. he was in the last charge of the war which took place at Mobile, Alabama. He was in the battle of Richmond, Kentucky; in the siege of Vicksburg and was with General Banks on the Red River Expedition, and other general actions. He was honorably discharged July 5, 1865. He was never wounded but bullets pierced his hat and clothing. After the War, Isaac N. Bales opened a store with his brother, Pleasant W. Bales as a partner at Wood's Station. Isaac N. was also Postmaster and Ticket Agent. In 1876, he sold out to Lewis Norton. Parents of three children. Namely:
William H. Bales; Mary E. Bales; Magnolia Bales.

Martha Jane Platt lived with her grandfather until she was 8 years old, then she lived with David and Martha Taylor, who were members of teh SOciety of Friends. When 18 years of age, she married Isaac Bales.
Pleasant and Mary (Abshire) Bales entered 80 acres in Washington Twp. in 1838. In 1864 moved to Merom, Sullivan Co., IN; returned to Randolph Co., IN where she died December 31, 1864. He returned to Merom, where he died February 8, 1865. Both buried at New Liberty Cemetery, in the county; Members of the Christian Church, Randolph Co.

James A. Bales, born January 23, 1831, who married November 20, 1853 to Ann Thornburg, who was born in thiis county May 11, 1837; They had two children: Marion S. and Edward W. -- but death came and took the two children and their mother. On April 14, 1865, he married Mary Jane Lamm, born in the county, April 11, 1841; She was the daughter of Josiah and Elizabeth (York) Lamm (scratched out and MILLS added). BOth natives of NC. Their children were: Rebecca Bales b. Sept 20, 1866. William H. Bales married Mary A. Fisher, dau. of Amos and Ann Fisher; They have one child, Newton A. Bales, (WHB, a son of Isaac Bales) Isaac N. The Liberty Cemetery north of Bloomingsport, in 32-19-14, gives Mary Bales, wife of Pleasant Bales, died Dec. 31, 1864, age 55 years; and Pleasant Bales, died February 8, 1865, age 54 years.
