Asael SMITH

Asael was the second son of Samuel SMITH.  Asael Smith predicted years before the birth of Jospeh, grandson, that "It has been borne in upon my soul that one of my descendants will promulgate a work to revolutionize the world of religious faith:.  Joseph later wrote: Asael Smith, long ago predicted that htere would be a prophet raised upo in his family, and my grandfather was fully satisfied that it was fulfilled in me.  My grandfather, Asael died in East Stockhom, St. Lawrence Co., NY, after having received the Book of Mormohn, and read it nearly through; and he declared that I was the very Prophet that he had long known would come in his family.

"A Roll of a Company Raised for Canada Service from Col. Thornton's and Col. Barlet's Regiments, " ms. at U. S. General Services Administration. The four officers appearing at the top of Aael Smith's muster roll headed Company  4 of Colonel Joshua Wingate's regiment, according todetailed history compiled from war records; the service of this unit is briefly noted: "The regiments under Col.s. Wyman and Wingate, were raised for the army of Canada, but joined the Northern Aermy in New York, Gen. Sullivan having made his successful retreat with the temnant of MOntgomery's Army before theeir arrival" (C. E. Porter, Miltary History of the State of New Hampshire [Concord, Londonberry and nearby towns in southern New Hampshire according to Edward L. Parker's History of Ondonberry (Boston, 1851), 337-38, and verified by the printed rolls indicating Asael's service in July and August 1776 in the "Londonderry or Nesmith Company," Rolls of the Soldiers in teh Revolutionary War, 1775 to May, 177 7, State Papers Series (Concord, New Hampsthire, 1885), 14:342; compare History of Londonderry, 347-49.

Local records fill Asael's missing Revolutionary years.  His refiment included some from adjoining Windham and Salem, where Asael SMnith was taxed from 1775 throught 1777.  He signed the American loyaty oath there in 1776, (Missellaneous Revolutionarey Documents of New Hampshire, State Papers Series ;Manchester, New Hampshire, 1910], 30:134).
