James Houk Dies: Beloved Santa Claus
James Henry Houk, beloved by Burbank's children for many years as the
city's strolling Santa Claus, has plassed away just one year short of the four
score mark. He died at his home at 11014 Penrose Street, Roscoe, on the after
of November 24, a month before the big day, Christmas Eve, that had climaxed
the year for him as Santa Claus for the old Burbank Businessmen;s association.
As that jolly old gentleman he saw to it that every kid in Burbank had a
personal visit with Santa Claus and got to know taht patron saint of childhood
for what he was - a jolly, happy hearted fellow who loved all children, a part
he lived all year without beenfit of whiskers and red robes. Santa Claus had
no regular spot, but was in and out of the stores and mingled with the folks on
the street, always leaving an extra bit of cheer wherever he went.
From 1935, four years after he came to Burbank from Kansas, his home when
he first became the Christmas symbol for the merchants until 1945 when the
group merged with the Chamber of Commerce, he was the tradition of the town,
with the exception of 1941, a war year too serious to permit of much
celebration on the home front.
