Newspaper Article on Hiram S. Wood's death

                        Early Montanan Called By Death--1927

        Hiram S. Wood drove stage between Fort Benton and Helena in early days.

Hiram S. Wood, pioneer of the Fort Benton and Helena country, passed away yesterday at his home, 304 East 5th St., following a lingering illness. He was 65 years of age at the time of his death and had been a resident of Anaconda for 14 months.

Mr. Wood was born in Sioux City, Iowa in 1862, but removed to Montana, when a very young man.  He was one of the early pioneers of this state, and in the early days drove stage between Fort Benton and Helena.  He operated a ranch at Gold Creek for many years, and later moved to Helena, his last residence before coming to Anaconda.

His son, Robert Wood of Butte, and three step-daughters, Mrs. Fred Schmook of Drummond, Mrs. W.D. Manlove of Whitehall, and Mrs. E.W. Kroma of Helena, were at his bedside at the time of his death.  Others surviving him are his widow, a nephew, Thomas Ditch of Anaconda; a step-son Philip Crutch of Helena; five daughters, Aimee Wood and Mrs. Maud Dufor of Idaho, Mrs. F.J. Roberta of Cottonwood, Ariz., Mrs. Pearl Bell of Lambert, Montana, and Mrs. Edna Cupples of Oregon, and a step-daughter, Mrs. William Kiefert of Anaconda.

Funeral services will be conducted this afternoon , 24 Apr 1927, at 3: o'clock at the C.A. Tuttle Company Parlors, the Rev, Albert Wennerberg officiating.  Interment will be made in Hill Cemetery.
