James Wilcher COOK

   James W was only 14 when his father died.  3 years later, when the Civil War began, he lied about his age and joined the CSA.  Enlisting in Danbury 18 May 1861, he was assigned to Co. F, 11th Reg. under Capt. R.K. Pepper.  he was wounded at the bvattle of first Manassus (Bull Run) and confined to the hospital  He must have been a pathetic sight.  Described in Confederate military record as 5' 2", fair complexion, blue eyes, light hair, and by occupation a farmer.  his real age was discovered and he was discharged and sent home.  The following Jan. , when he turned 18, he re-enlisted and remained in the army until the end of the war.  He was wounded a second time at Fredericksburg in 1863.  After the war, he returned home and married his neighbor and childhood sweetheart, Mary J. Venable.  On the day he died, he had chopped tobacco until noon.  When he came in to wach up for the meal, he had a heart attack, falling across the cradle.   He is buried in an unmarked grave at Friends Ch. Cem.  near Level Cross.

Julius W. COOK

  Julius left home as a young man and did not return for 40 years.  He married and raised a family in Kansas, but no contact has ever been made with them.  Little is known of his life.

Listed in the 1850 census as being 45 , living with her mother, and as "a 3 feet high dwarf".
