Zachariah HIATT

Zachariah found in The Winchester Journal Herald, Saturday, December 28, 1946.  Randolph Co., Ind.  The History of the Hiatt Family.
Zachariah moved to Grayson Co., Vir. probably about the same time as his father.

                       Had Small Nursery
It is not known when Zachariah and his family left Grayson Co., Vir.  It is likely that it was about the same time that Jonathan and Christopher were given certificates to Fairfield MM, Ohio in 1813.  No evidence shows that he settled in Clinton Co., Ohio, but more likely came to Wayne Co., Ind., as his wife's relatives were moving there.  Tucker says that Zachariah first settled in Wayne Co.  His stay must have been short as he is recorded as resident of Randolph Co., in the 1820 census.  He entered land in Whiteriver Twp. in Jan of 1818.
It has been said that Zachariah had a small nursery that he maintained from an early date in conjunction with his farm.

Marriage information sent by Marjorie Smith, Grayson Co, Va. Marriage Records. Zachariah Hiatt m Anne Coffin 13 Sept 1803.

Zachariah Hiatt was born in N.C. and settled in Wayne Co., Ind. in 1814, see Ind. Ancestory lines.

In 1808, in Grayson Co., Va., Zachariah Hiatt purchased 200 acres from his parents (see page 90). In 1813 they sell this land to Zachariah's brother-in-law, Robert Montgomery:
Grayson Co., Va. - Deed Book 3, p. 228 - 4 November 1813 - Zachariah and Anne Hiatt to Robert Montgomery - 200 acres - $200 - Cramberry and Road Creeks, br. of Big Reed Island - April 1814.

Deed Book 8, p. 9 - 22 October 1836 - Zachariah and Anna Hiatt of  Randolph Co., Indiana - to Edmund Sumpter of Floyd Co., Va. - 150 acres - $30 - on Road Creek.

Sketch of Zachariah Hiatt, written by Willard C. Heiss, a 3rd-great-grandson (R81).: Zachariah Hiatt - Randolph Co., Indiana. Removed to Indiana with his family in the fall of 1814, settling near his wife's people (the Coffins). in Wayne Co. In the fall of 1818, he removed to Randolph Co., settling in the White River Settlement of Friends, living there until his death in 1860. It is said that he maintained a small nursery supplying the early settlers with fruit trees, etc. Although after his marriage no reference is found of his connection to the Friends church, it would appear that at least a part of his family was connected with the White River (Hicksite). Meeting, namely, Moses, Mary, Sarah, Joseph and Keziah. (Zachariah and Ann Hiatt are buried in White River Friends Cemetery, near Winchester, Indiana, in marked graves -- editor.)

1820 Census, Randolph Co., Indiana: Zachariah Hiatt - 1 male aged 26 to 45, 1 male aged 18 to 26, 1 male aged 16 to 18, 2 males aged under 10; 1 female aged 26 to 45, 1 female aged 16 to 26, 2 females aged 10 to 16, 2 females aged under 10.

1830 Census, Randolph Co., Indiana: Zachariah Hiatt - 1 male aged 50 to 60, 1 male aged 20 to 30, 1 male aged 15 to 20; 1 female aged 50 to 60, 2 females aged 20 to 30, 1 female aged 15 to 20, 1 female aged 10 to 15.

In 1940 Miss Bernice Lonsdale (1910 - 40th Street, Des Moines, Iowa). sent in the following data: (She was a great-grand-daughter of Zachariah Hiatt's daughter Armilla who m. 1827 to George Knight -- editor.)
"Enclosed is a copy of the Hiatt material. The source was great-grandfather George Knight. He lived to be 97, had a keen memory to the last, and after he was 90 dictated this data to grandmother and she made a copy which has been handed down to this generation. The date may not be accurate, but I am sure the names are. There are many dates missing, too, because many people living in 1883, the time at which George gave this information, have since died. All of George and Armilla's children are dead and many of the grand-children, but I do not have those dates….

"Source: George Knight - 1883 - The grandmother of Armilla Hiatt knight was a Mills. There were a great many girls in the family. Nathan Hunt, a Quaker preacher, married one, John Wheeler, one, Evan Stevens, Silas Merris, Zachariah Dicks, Valentine Pegg, Uriah Baldwin, Joseph Hiatt, one. (He has confused the sisters of Joseph Hiatt, and other relatives, with the sisters of Keziah (Mills). Hiatt -- editor.)

"Zachariah Hiatt, son of Joseph, had two sisters who married Montgomerys. Anna, wife of Zachariah Hiatt and mother of Armilla, wife of George Knight, was daughter of Libni and Hepsabeth Coffin, natives of Nantucket. Libni was a sailor for may years and was captain's mate part of the time. Libni's father was William Coffin. Libni, oldest brother of Anna, age unknown, wheelwright. William, next brother, died in 1846 and was buried in the graveyard at Booneville, Iowa. He was Joseph Goodson's wife's father who lived and died in Dallas Co., Iowa. Nathaniel Coffin, next, age unknown, wheelwright.

"Not much known about the sisters of Anna Coffin. One married a Davis, and Ruth married --- Bond, and Hepsa married David Wright and died in Mahaska Co., Iowa, about 1860. (Mary Coffin, d/o Greenberry, m.c1860 in Iowa to Alexander J. Hiatt, a great-grandson of John and Mary (Thomas). Hiatt of Guilford Co., NC. Descendants will appear elsewhere in this volume -- editor.)  Samuel, son of Libni, died in Mahaska County about 1855. (Then follows an account of the children and grandchildren of Zachariah Hiatt, which will appear elsewhere in this volume, under the appropriate headings -- editor.)
