Christopher Hiatt, Jr. was born in Guilford County, North Carolina, 2-5-1783 Jemima (Hunt) Hiatt was born in Grayson, County, Virginia. After their marriage, they moved to Grayson County, Virginia. Only a few years were spent in Virginia, however, until with covered wagon and team he removed with his wife and children to Clinton County, Ohio, in the year 1813. Their new home was about 50 miles North and East of Cincinnati, Ohio. One child died enroute and was buried by the roadside, Later when some member of the party returned along the route, the location of the buriel place could not be found. They were often disturbed by the alarms incident to the War of 1812, and had to travel long distances in order to get supplies. Cincinnati, Ohio, was one of the places where they went to trade, as he told his Grandson Larenzo Dow Hiat that when he first saw Cincinnnti, Ohio, it was a small town composed of log houses, and log stores, with cattle and pigs running around at will.Christopher Hiatt, Jr. died in 1868. Aged 85 years. Jemima (Hunt) Hiatt, his wife, died in 1869, aged 85 years. They are both buried in Martinsville, Ohio. Asher Hiatt, son of Christopher Hiatt, Jr., born 7-7-1803 near Guilford County, Courthouse in North Carolina married and had two children, They were Chambers Hiatt, and Elizabeth Hjatt. Chambers Hiatt, son of Asher Hiatt, married Nancy McKibben. They had one child, a girl, named Lida Hiatt; Lida Hiatt married Frank Randall. Chambers Hiatt was a lover of fine horses, he owned two teams of well matched saddle and driving horses. They were the center of attraction wherever he exhibited then. They were pure white. Chambers Hiatt lived with His grandfather Christopher Hiatt, Jr. for a number of years. After the death of Chambers Hiatt, his widow married a merchant by the name of Arnold. Elizabeth “Beth” Hiatt, daughter of Asher Hiatt and sister of Chambers Hiatt, married a Mr. Turner, Their children were: Asher Hiatt Turner, Narcissa Turner, Rosina Turner, Mary Ellen Turner, and some younger children.
The Turner family moved to Page County, Iowa, when my father, Lorenzo Dow Hiatt was a boy. Asher Hiatt, Turner, grandson of Asher Hiatt, lived in Baxter Springs, Kansas, for a few years, and often visited in my home. We had many a long talk about the Hiatts. Samuel Hiatt, son of Christopher Hiatt, Jr., married Mary Terrell. Their Children were: David T, Hiatt, Columbus C. Hiatt, Americus V. Alonzo Hiatt, and a girl who died in infancy. Columbus C. Hiatt, son of Samuel Hiatt, married, and raised a large family. He moved his family to either Page or Taylor County, Iowa, when Lorenzo Dow Hiatt was a young man

1837 John Rhoades Incident - Hid John and his family in a haystack - S2, page 17 "While this slavery agitation was going on, another line of work sprung up known as the Under Ground Railroad. Some of the slaves had found out, by some means or other, that if they could get across the Ohio river into Indiana or Ohio that they would find friends that would hide them from the slave hunter, and help them through to Canada. Grandfather was very active in this work. One instance of this work we might mention: This was known as the "John Rhodes Case." Grandfather and Grandmother joined in this separation, and from that time on to the time that the Civil war broke out in 1861 marked the greatest activities of our family in this great cause. We might stop here and mention that the only land mark of the location of the Anti-Slavery meeting house at Westfield is the grave yard at the north part of town, as that was laid out by Anti-Slavery Friends." - "Grandmother had decided by this time that she would not use any clothing material that was produced by slave labor. This decision caused much inconvenience to the family, and some privations. One instance we might mention on this line: The nearest Free Labor store was at Greensborough, Henry County, Indiana, a distance of forty miles, very poor roads and no bridges across the streams, but one day in the latter part of winter Noah was sent on horseback to that store to get a few pounds of spun cotton. In the morning when he had to start home it was raining some, and by noon it was both raining and snowing. When he arrived home he was so nearly frozen that he could not get off his horse neither could he walk to the house."

Friend" Military: Robert Did not agree with militarism and capital punishment - S2, page 18: "One other great principle of Grandfather's I think is worth mentioning, and that is his attitude toward militarism and capital punishment. He did not believe one man could take another man's life, and be doing the will of his Heavenly Father whom he served. Therefore he was opposed to war or drilling men for war. One illustration of this: There was a time in the state when all men over twenty-one years of age were expected to meet at the county seat or some stated place to take military training. When he lived in Hendricks County the time came for him to meet for training. He did not go. After some time the sheriff came to collect the fine for his not appearing, and took a new axe for the fine."
