Hi Larry,
I am so excited to hear from you. I have both Cox family (my maternal grandmother was a Cox from Arkansas, a descendant of Rev. War vet: Solomon Cox (1745 - 1820/1844.)
Parents John Jr Cox 1699 – 1755 Mary Harlan 1714 – 1753
Spouse: (Amy Nancy Naomi?) Hussey 1742 – 1818
and Hiatt family connections (second great grandmother on my father's mother's side of the family) Mary L. (Lou or Louisa) Hiatt 1847 - 1932 who married a Civil War Vet Herman T. Gregg and after his death a L. S. Ketchum. Her father was Eli Hiatt 1822 - 1900? (death date from stories but no death record or place) and mother was Lorinda Patterson 1820 - 1849 (Grant Co., Indiana.)
Eli Hiatt was the son of Josiah Hiatt ** 1795 – 1852 born in Grayson, Carroll, VA and a cousin Esther or Easther Hiatt ** 1804 – 1880 born in North Carolina. Josiah was buried in Grant Co., Indiana and I believe Esther (or Easter/Easther) may have died in Madison County, IA.
I live in Bellevue just south of Omaha and enjoy taking photos for Find A Grave (amongst other things) and since I knew my paternal grandmother was both in SW Iowa in Mills County, I have enjoyed exploring graves in Mills and Fremont Counties. At this point I have not found a connection to the many other Hiatts buried in Sidney and Mt. Zion, but would not be surprised if there were some more distant connection.
From what I understand about the Hiatt familym is that their ancestors were Quakers and they often had large families and sometimes married within the family.

There are also many Cox families. Mine appears to come from John Sr. Cox my 7th great grandfather
Birth 24 September 1675 in Drayton, Berkshire, , England Death 1711 in New Castle County, Delaware, USA my records . . . Kennet, Chester, Pennsylvania
The Cox line gets messy with so many John Cox's listed. In my research I have down 3 different wives for this Cox and do not know if all or any are the correct ones.
My research has been done almost entirely by computer so it has its limits. I would love to hear back from you and learn more about the Hiatt and the Cox families.
I will be traveling with my Girl Scout troop ( I am like the Grandma to the troop) on Thurs. and Fri. of this week and am praying for good weather as we have had numerous thunderstorms and tornado watches in the last week.

Jonathan Hiatt, of randolph Co., Indiana - removed with his family from Ohio to said county in fall of 1818. He settled in the White River Settlement, where he remained until hie death. He was a farmer and in religion a Friend. In the Hicksite separation there were no diownments in any of the Meetings in the County, except at White River. Here it seemed that Hiatts formed the nucleus of the short-lived meeting for worship. Jonathan Hiatt served this meeting as overseer. (Willard C. Heiss - R81.)

1820 Census, Randolph Co., Indiana: Jonathan Hiatt - 1 male aged over 45, 1 male aged 26 to 45, 3 males aged 18 to 26, 1 male aged 16 to 18, 2 males aged 10 to 16, 2 males aged under 10; 1 female aged 26 to 45, 1 female aged 16 to 26, 2 females aged under 10.

1830 Census, Randolph Co., Indiana: Jonathan Hiatt Sr., - 1 male aged 60 to 70, 2 males aged 15 to 20, 1 female aged 50 to 60, 1 female aged 20 to 30.

In 1850 Rachel (Williams). Hiatt was living with her son Nathan Hiatt in Wabash Co., Indiana.

Jonathan Hiatt who lived in Grayson Co., Va., 1813 was a Quaker, and married Rachel Williams.  This Jonathan had a brother, George Hiatt living in Virginia at the time of the Revolutionary War, of whom many eccentricites were told at the time the British had him a prisoner. Being a Quaker he refused to bear arms or fight and persisted in riding his gun like a little boy rides his broomstick. (From Harmon Hiatt's Notes--Effie Hiatt van Tuyl R-20

History of the Hiatt Family.  Randolph Co., Ind.
                  Written by Williard Heis.
Jonathan was barely more than a year old when his father died.  His childhood and youth must have been shadowed with many trials as his widowed mother struggled to raise her family.  While yet very young the Rev. War was being waged even to the very doorstep to the Hiatt homestead.  For after the Battle of Guilford Courthouse, both American and British Troops were nursed at neighboring Quaker homes.
                      Second White Settler
Tucker, in his History of Randolph Co., states that Jonathan Hiatt was the second settler in the White River Settlement, Benjamin Cox being the first.  This is rather problematical, but there is no doubt he was among the first.  Tucker further states he lived in a camp at first, but before long built a hewed a log house of only 1 story.  There were but seven or eight hands, and the work took them 2 or 3 days.  This cabin was located on the land he had entered.  It was near the Whiteriver Meeting House, that was built a few years later.  He died about 1836 and his wife Rachel, died about 1851.

What the Early years were like (taken from Direct Lineage
and History of John B. and Sarah (Kenworthy) Hiatt by Marian Hiatt Johnson)

Jonathan Hiatt brought our John B. and his other children from North Carolina t Champaign County, Ohio in 1813 when the country was still a wilderness.  Jonathan then moved on to Randolph County, Indinana in 1818.  In
the meantime, John B. married in 1816 and his first three children were born in Ohio.  In 1823 he and other families migrated on to Montgomery County, Ind.  The country was still wild, very overgrown with trees and underbush and
populated with Indians.  John B. and Sarah Kenworthy Hiatt had lived in the County eight years and the last of their eight children had been born...

Taken from the Darlington Centennial Book "Darlington-Yesterday and Today 1836-1936
                   Gravely Run Friends Church
The history of the Friends church now known as Gravelly Run dates back to 1830, when a Friends Meeting was set up and a building built one half miles west of what is now Garfield, and where an old cemetary is located.
Among the names listed in the old records show...John B. Hiatt as the leaders of that time.  Along with these men was the name of Michajah Peebles who with the first named men, was appoined to insepct land on which to build
the first church or meeting house.  The first trustees were John B. Hiatt, Jonathan Largent and Hudson Middleton, and Timothy Johnson was an overseer....

John B. Hiatt lived on the same road (on what was later know as old state road 47) and about one half mile west of this first building.  Later the church was relocated in what is now known the Gravelly Run neighborhood, one and one half miles east and a mile south.  The present building was built in 1880.
As the population increased and the individual communities grew stronger they would petition their parents congregation to set them off so they could have their own Monthly meeting and not have to travel such a distance.
This was the case of John B. Hiatt and the other Quakers in Montgomery, Tippecanoe and Boone Counties.  They petitioned to be set off in 1830.  They built their meeting house one half west of Garfield, Ind. and had their first
Montly Meeting 12-25-1830,  It was known as Sugar River Montly Meeting. This took in all of Montgomery, Tippecanoe and Boone Counties.
In 1878, John B. Hiatt's Sugas River Meeting house was discontinued Darlington's Center Meeting house (church) was discontinued in 1940 leaving only the Gravelly Run Church in operation today.  The present building was built in 1880. The Gravelly Run Church has all the original Sugar Riber Montly Meeting Records.
The records say that John B.'s children were disowned, but it is apparent that they left the Society of Friends of their own accord.  According to this record, six of John B. and Sarah Hiatt's children were disowned by the Quakers leaving Rachel and Sarah.

History of the Hiatt Family  Taken from The Guilford Genealogist published by The Guilford County Genealogical Society of N.C. Winter 1986 #32 Vol 13 #2

Among the earlist settlers in the White River Settlement of Friends were two brothers, Jonathan and Christopher and a cousin, Zachariah Hiatt.  Jonathan Hiatt and his wife, Rachel, were charter members of the White River Monthly Meeting.  Records fail to disclose any close affiliation of Zachariah and his family with the meeting, several of his children, however, were disowned for marrying contrary to the discipline.  So from those meager references to the minutes of the meeting it is to be assumed that the family still held in spirit if not in action to the teachings of their forefathers.
