January's right eye was glass.  He liked good liquer.  He couldn't write.  He signed his citizenship papers with an "X".  We've been told he was left-handed, also.  Janvier was named for the
French month of January, because he was born on January 1st.  It became a tradition that was handed down in the family, and several more have that name of either January or Janvier.

Some information was gleaned from Shirley Lucier Heudier, and Henry Lucier, both descendants of January.  Also, through some information from Amy Wood Lucier Carlson in Selah, WA.  Janvier was christened on 2 Jan 1836, at St. Edouard, Napierville, Quebec, Canada.

A lot of information was gather from microfilms taken of the actual records kept at the
Church of the Immaculate Conception of Paincourt, Kent, Ontario, Canada. (Which include several children that we weren't aware of.)

Felicite was spelled so many different ways, we,ve lost count.  It was spelled Phelis in the Kent Co. History. 1904.  It said that she had married Janvier Lucier and the resided in Frenchtown, Missoula, Montana.

Felicite, Felice, Fellis, Felis, Philis, Phelis,Phyllis.....etc, Felicite had dark hair and the tan skin of the French blood.  She refused to learn the English language, forcing everyone to learn French to converse with her.  ( It had to be difficult for some of her son's wives.)

Felicite was married at the age 24, of to Janvier Lucier, a widower of 37. ( They were married at Dover South, which is a twp. of Paincourt.) She was his 2nd wife, as the 1st had passed away 2 years previously and left him with 4 children who needed a mother.  She gave birth to 11 more children, raising a total of 12 to adulthood.

When you think of Janvier moving his family to Montana in 1884, you really have to admire his wife's pioneer spirit.  They had 7 children from ages 18 to 9 months and she was pregnant, again.....  They anglisized their names to the American version when Janvier became a citizen of the United States.  January Frederick Lucier, Phyllis, Fred, Tom, Mary, Pete, Jack, John, Selma, Fredrick, and Dan.

January applied for citizenship into the United States on 5 Apr., 1893. It was finalized on 20 May, 1912.  He traveled up to the Beauvais Mines, near Pincher Creek, Alberta, Canada several times, with his family, to suppliment an income to support his family.  His grandson, Henry, remembered the trip, lasting several years at a time, but never long enough to jeopardize their naturalization.  (The original document in possession of Donna Hiatt.)

Phyllis had a brother that lived in Cowley, Alberta, Canada (about 5 miles N.W. of Pincher Creek.)  His name was Ed Emery.  It has been hard to find any information on Ed.

Phyllis died on 9 Aug., 1919 at Frenchtown and was buried in the Frenchtown Cemetery, on 11 Aug., 1919, next to her husband, January Lucier.  Felicite lived over 71 years of age. Submitter: Donna Lucier Hiatt has pictures of Phyllis, the Frenchtown Cemetery and the family markers.

August 1919, from the Daily Missoulian - Missoula, Montana

"Mrs. Fellis Lucier, wife of January Lucier, a Pioneer farmer of the Frenchtown Valley, passed away early yesterday morning at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. John Leonard, 519 Rollins Street, where she had been residing for the past two years.  Mrs. Lucier had been ailing for many months and therefore her death was not unexpected.
"Mrs. Lucier was born in Canada in 1849, being 70 years old and seven months, coming to the U.S. 30 years ago, living with her husband on a ranch in Frenchtown country for many years.
"The body was taken today from the Morin and Forkenbrock undertaking place to the Leonard home."

Event, year, place:  Living 1884, Dover Twp.
