“Mrs. Hiett’s life spanned five wars. She was a native of Frederick Co., Va. Winchester, Va., was taken, lost, and retaken 72 times during the war. Capt. (Joseph). Hiett had two horses shot from under him during the war, and was within 20 feet of Lee when he surrendered.” (From The Winchester (Va.) Evening Star, 19 July 1949.) (R104).

"Winchester, VA was taken, lost and retaken 42 times during the Civil War. Capt. Joseph HIETT had two horses shot out from under him during the war, and was within 20 feet of Lee when he surrendered." From the Winchester Evening Star, Winchester VA, July 19, 1949.
