'Descendants of Thomas Gillespie I'; ; ; FILE: Enc #P-318.
QUESTION: Could his dob be earlier than 1760? If he was fighting in 1774, he
would have only been 14... ?

-----------

From Bill Wilson:
"Thomas GILLESPIE ... migrated from Ireland before 1740 ...settling on
Stuart's Creek of the Cowpasture River... His will in Augusta County, June 15,
1790 lists his wife Eleanor, sons: John, Thomas II, Jacob, Samuel, James and
William; Daughters: Mary DONALY, Hannah JONES, Jean, Eleanor II, and Ann..."
"...Thomas [Jr] left the farm on the Cowpasture to go with Jack SEVIER to the
Watauga Valley in Tennessee (then believed to be in Virginia). He fought in
Battle of Point Pleasant (mouth of the Kanawha River and the Ohio) in which the
Shawnee were defeated under Chief Cornstalk on September 7, 1774. He fought in
the Battle of King's Mountain, South Carolina on October 7, 1780 under either
SEVIER or SHELBY. He became acquainted with Augusta Cty, men under Col.
CAMPBELL. He married Peggy BOWEN, daughter of Lieut. Rees BOWEN and settled at
the Cove west of Jeffersonville (renamed Tazewell) upon the formation of
Tazewell Cty. He was a Justice..."
COMMENT: if he was born in 1760, he was pretty young to be fighting in 1774...
could his birth date be earlier? - tmc]
