Hi. I have an Elizabeth Gillespie, b. SC, about 1809,in my family line. She
married William Castleberry, b. 1805. They lived at Benton (Calhoun) County,
Alabama from 1830 to 1850, and later went to Arkansas. I would appreciate any
more information about them.

Elizabeth A. Gillespie, the sister of Hugh Gillespie, was prob. born in SC bef
ca 1810 but she was married to a Carithers/Caruthers by 24 Apr 1837 when she was
listed as residing in Jefferson Co. I don't know anything about her after that
or if she remarried or where she lived. I do know that my Gillespies had ties to
Benton Co. Gillespies and I have seen the name in Calhoun Co. but don't know if
there's a connection there.

"Elysabeth Ann Gillespie, daughter of David & Mary Margaret (Calhoun)
Gillespie, married first Hugh Means Carithers before 1819 probably in Abbeville,
SC, possibly in Elyton, Jefferson County, AL. They had a large family, and Hugh
died about late 1834. In the summer of 1837, during the settlement of the estate
of Elysabeth's brother, Matthew H. Gillespie, she married John J. Curbow. In
mid-summer, she is referred to as a Carithers, that fall as "John J. Curbow and
wife Elysabeth". That reference is all the legal record I've ever found of my
great, great grandfather, though there are numerous family stories about him. He
was said to be a lot younger than his wife and very interested in her
inheritances from her husband and brother. John and Elysabeth had a son
Lafayette who died young and on May 14, 1839, a daughter, Martha Ann Curbow.
They moved to Mississippi in the early 1840's and were divorced shortly
thereafter. Just after 1850, Elysabeth, Martha and two of the younger sons, Hugh
M., Jr. and John went to live with an older son, Rev. David H. Carithers in
Independence County, AR. My great grandfather, Frank Bedford Fowler, moving from
Orange County, NC with his parents in 1852, stopped in Batesville to earn money
to begin a farm. Frank and Martha met, were married in 1857 and moved beside his
family in Newton County, AR where they spent the rest of their lives. Family
legend has it that Martha was unable to attend her mother's funeral because
Elysabeth died in Mountain Home, AR the same day Martha gave birth to her first
child Dec 11, 1858. I know a bit about Hugh M., Jr. who is buried in Wesley
Chapel Cemetery south of Pine Bluff, AR; John who lived with Frank and Martha
and died about 1866 of tuberculosis contacted in a Confederate prison camp and
David who left as a Methodist Episcopal South missionary into present-day
Oklahoma and was never seen or heard from again. Would love to find out about
any other Carithers or Gillespie descendants. ..."

in Anderson Co. SC, in 1831. There were other Gillespie-Castleberry connections
in the same area..."
