From a letter written by Dave (Hiatt) which contains a version of the Hiatt family history with some interesting turns to it.

"Now as for Wm Henry Harrison (Hiatt), I have heard two things, 1) he was born in Ohio and moved to Indiana when he was 4 years old and 2) He was born and raised in Indiana.  I'm not sure which is accurate.  He entered the Civil War from Indiana, I don't know how long he served.  Sometime during the war he, along with many others, was captured and interred in Andersonville prison at Andersonville, Georgia.  He was a big man, stood 6'2" in stocking feet & weighed 208# all his life, but when he was released from prison he only weighed 95# & was very nearly dead.  When asked what he did with his gun when hostilities ceased he said he took it by the barrel and threw it as far as he could and for as long as he lived he never again ever permitted a firearm of any kind in his house.  After he returned home he got the fever along with a couple of his brothers and joined the great western exodus then in progress.

As far as I've been able to learn, his folks did not come west with them and I assume they lived out their life in Ind.  This is also what led me to believe that he and Appletree Jesse were brothers, also there should be one more and I'm not sure of his name, it may be Amos.  Another piece of evidence that they were brothers was shown by Fred Hiatt who lived in Sioux Falls.  He showed me a paper which he kept in a fireproof strong box safe, long since yellowed with age and so old & dry it had to be handled very carefully.  This paper gave an account of the famous apple tree and of course gave proper consideration to Jesse.  Of course it did not mention any of the other Hiatts but he thought they were brothers.  I don't know whether he really knew or not.  Fred was one of the younger members of the family altho not the youngest.  Now for what its worth, I think I wrote you before about Arthur Hiatt, he lived in O'Neil, Neb. and claimed to be descended from one of 4 Hiatt brothers who came over on the Mayflower.  He'd corner my Dad when he could to try to learn more of their ancestory, this always made Dad mad and he'd avoid him, when he could. Evidently Dad didn't know who his forefathers were and didn't care in the least.  Also a few years ago a lady called, from Ft. Pierre, me to talk about ancestory.  She, her mother was a Hiatt, was from Oklahoma, she said 4 brothers came to Oklahoma when that state opened for homesteaders.  Their names were John, Ward, Newton and Fred and they supposedly were descendants of the Mayflower Hiatts.  We were always going to get together and compare notes but apparently they left without ever getting together.  Her husband was an itenerant worker, he worked on the dam awhile and left when it started getting cold weather.

I guess you know the story pretty well from there on.  Apparently Grandfathers brothers homesteaded in Iowa, or bought land there, but for some reason Grandpa went on to Nebraska.  He either bought or homesteaded land (80
acres),  (He was a lumber jack working mostly in the winter when farming was slow),  near the small town of Allen, Nebr.  They moved on to the farm near Lynch in 1892 and on to Ainsworth aboiut 10 years later.  Grandmother died at Lynch when she returned there for a visit in abt. 1915 or 1916 and is buried in Highland Cemetery North of Lynch.  Grandfather died in 1917 at Ainsworth and is buried out there.  A few years ago we kids all chipped in and purchased a headstone for his grave.  I don't know of anything that  I've missed but probably Ivan or Robert or possibly Carline could fill in things that I've missed or am not aware of...."  From David Hiatt

    Dear Mr. Anderson:
Recently, I was doing some family research on the Internet.  In so doing, I came upon your name and address as having submitted information for the family of Jesse Elwin HIATT.  I assume you are related to him.  I am his great grandson through Elliott HIATT.
Seeing that you must be interested in family history too, I gathered up this information and thought I would send it to you for your records and any clues for additional research you may want to do.  Maybe you have some records that I would be interested in too.
If we are relatives, it would be nice to meet each other some time.  Call, email or write at your convenience.

Sincerely,
