Place of burial:
Fordtown Cemetery, Sullivan Co., TN
UPDATE: 1998-03-12
=============================================================================
To Don Fink From Dale Fink, Jan 1997
We have records which prove the land on Kendrick's Creek, Sullivan Co., TN
has been in the family for at least 5 generations. Emma "Hazel" Pickens is
the present owner of this property here on Kendrick's Creek. This land was
passed down from James Pickens to David Pickens to William Pickens to Jay and
Samuel Pickens and to Hazel Pickens Childress.
TRADITIONS: Mr. Clancey Pickens writes: James Pickens that possessed land
on Kendrick's Creek built a big log house on the same place and one is now
standing near a spring. Also he built a school house and they taught bible
on Sunday. An old cemetery near Bethesda Presbyterian Church seems to be the
Pickens buring ground. Many old field stones there. Tombstones have been
destroyed by cattle allowed to graze in the cemetery.
The first records we have places this land into the hands of James Pickens
in the 1780's, where we find James Pickens purchasing 200 acres of land from
Benjamin Hardin, June 5, 1784. Then a land grant from the State of North
Carolina to James Pickens of 100 acres, adjoining John Cox and Henry Clark.
For a more detail listing of the land owned by James see the files of James
Pickens, son of William Pickens and Ann (Oliver) Scott.
For nearly 200 years the Fink's and Pickens' have lived side by side here in
Sullivan County, TN. Much of the success of the Fink family is due to the
assistance they received from the earlier Pickens families. Some of the land
once owned by James Pickens was passed down to my Fink ancestors. Following
is a list of some of the transactions and Deeds of Conveyance's concerning
the Fink's and Pickens while they lived here on Kendrick Creek.
