In 1950 William Temple Hiatt wrote: “To begin with, I cannot give you the maiden name of my great-grandmother Martha x Hiatt. I cannot recall that I ever heard it.
“I recall a Susan Brooks, whom I saw when a boy, in Randolph Co., Indiana, who was an aunt of fathers, but I do not know her maiden name.
“Then another of his aunts married to Samuel Perry, lived in Bloomington, Ills in the early 1880’s, but do not know if she was a Hiatt or Kimbrough. “I recall a time when a boy in Indiana when a cousin a young man, Ira Cox, from Illinois visited us, said to be a cousin, but do not know where the relationship originated.

“....My father moved to Iowa when I was 13 and I only remember of the relatives previous to that. I am now 76 and it is difficult to remember  also to write. There are only five of us first cousins now left.
“My father had cousins named McCracken and Mendenhalls of the latter I remember John and Amos Mendenhall. One of them patented the first adding machine, I read in a Winchester paper after his death. John I remember as having but one arm and had a huckster route." (”23).

Ratliffe, our subject was wedded to Mary Hobson in Salem Iowa in July 1839.  She was the daughter of Joseph and Mary (Gibbs) Hobson who were early settlers of his county.  Samuel P. had taken a claim east of his brother Ephriam and their first experience in married life was had in a shanty far worse then a pole cabin....
   According to the 1880 Census fo Carroll Co., Mo.  DeWitt township.. Ruth
was living with her son, Joshua, and stayed there until her death in 1892.
