p. 48. "Fort Independence. ...Records of Matthew THOMSON family state that
he came from Augusta Co, VA in vacinity [sic] of the Old Stone Church, to
Abbeville Dist. SC in 1774 where he settled on Little River on what is now
known as the CRAWFORD Plantation. To insure safety during the Revolution he
moved into a fort near Lowndesville (Ft. Independence) [in Wesern Abbeville
County, SC] (. In doing so he exposed himself so that it brought on an illness
that soon ended his life, before the end of the war. Matthew THOMSON was the
father of Ann THOMSON who was the wife of General Robert ANDERSON, also of
Matthew THOMSON wo escaped on the Tory Colonel's horse..."
