Jamie Ault Grady wrote a couple of books on the BOWENS. The name Rees comes
from Moses BOWEN'S wife's maiden name: Rebecca REES. There is quite a whole
chapter on Lt. Reece and Margaret Levisa (SMITH) BOWEN. They were one of the
first families in Tazewell Co., VA and there are proofs listed for the facts
given. The BOWENS and GILLESPIES were listed and seemed intermarry a lot. These
volumes can be accessed through the Family History Center. If I can be of help
just let me know.

The Bowens and Gillespies go back to at least the early-to-mid 1700s in
Augusta and other counties in Virginia.
Rees had at least two brothers who married Gillespie sisters. One, Robert
Bowen, married Mary Gillespie, my 4th-great aunt. Another brother of Rees,
Charles, married Agnes [Nancy] Gillespie, also my 4th-great aunt. My direct-line
ancestor is John, the brother of Mary and Agnes Gillespie.
Do you have any information about the parents and grandparents of Rees? I've
seen that his grandfather was Moses Bowen, who arrived in America from Wales in
c. 1698. I don't know how accurate that is though.
Also, do you have any information on Rees' father-in-law, William Gillespie?

Elizabeth, Thanks so much for your response to my query on the Smith list of
Genforum. Your information certainly sounds like Your John Smith and his wife
Margaret are my ancestors as well. Only the military rank of John, and the first
name Hugh for Rees Bowen are different from my information.
I have a great deal I can share with you about Rees Bowen and his wife
Margaret Louise "Levisa" Smith. Rees (all documents of the time spelled it that
way), was the son of John Bowen and Lily McIlhaney who spent most of their lives
in Augusta Co, VA. Rees' grandparents were Moses Bowen and Rebecca Rees
(originally spelled Rhys) who came from Wales to Gwynedd township, Chester Co,
PA (near Philadelphia) in 1698 and purchased 10,000 acres. Rees Bowen (I've
never seen the name Hugh) was born in 1737 in Augusta Co, VA and died at the
Battle of Kings Mountain in North Carolina, in 1780. About eight years prior to
his death, Rees and Levisa, as she was commonly called, purchased a large tract
of land in what is today Tazewell Co, VA and many of their descendants have
remained there. That same land and the original house they built, with many
additons through the years, is today owned by Rees Bowen VII. Levisa Smith Bowen
lived to a very old age, reared her children as a widow, and was known for her
courage, leadership, and strong business abilities. I'm descended from this
family through two different lines. A lot has been written about them, and I'll
be glad to share anything you would be interested in having.
"...please tell me ... about John Smith and his wife Margaret Clark(e)....
their ancestry, their other children, where they lived, etc. I've just started
to search this line. I've been told that Margaret's family came to this country
during the 1600's and that her linage qualifies for membership in the Colonial
Dames. I look forward to hearing from you. Thanks again for your response.
Sincerely,
Robert L. Perry III   rperry@awod.com

I'm researching Col. John Smith and his daughter Margaret Louise "Levisa"
Smith (1750-1837) who married Lt. Rees Bowen in Rockingham Co, Virginia, in
1756. Rees Bowen was killed at Kings Mt. in 1780. Will respondents please copy
