Calhoun Gillespie 1770-1852 ALA by Saralyn Trusty
"Mary M. Calhoun was the daughter of Patrick (called "Little Pat" to
distinquish him from his uncle who was often called "Patrick, Esp." - even
though he was said to be an unusally tall man for the time) and Sarah (McKinley)
Calhoun. Patrick was born c1740 in Cumberland Co PA to James Calhoun and a lady
whose maiden name was Long but who is variously recorded as Nancy, Susannah, or
Anna. He married first c1757 Alice Crag. His second marriage took place 26 Feb
1767. After his 1777 death in Abbeville, SC,and before her father's estate
settlement in 1789, his widow married Hugh Baskin. Sarah (McKinley) Calhoun
Baskin was born about 1750 to John & Esther (Wilson) McKinley. James Calhoun,
oldest son of Patrick and Catherine (Montgomery) Calhoun, was born c1716 in
County Donegal, Ireland and died along with his mother and others in the Long
Cane Cherokee uprising 1 Feb 1760 in Abbeville, SC. David Gillespie's parentage
is less easy to prove. Some researchers believe he must be connected with
(probably as a son from an earlier marriage) Matthew Gillespie (c1726 - 1793)
whose first marriage to Anna (possibly Shannon) took place about 1753, but who
named in his will only the children from his second marriage about 1770 to his
first cousin, Frances "Fanny" Pickens. This Matthew was the son of Matthew &
Lucy (Pickens) Gillespie of Montgomery County, PA.
