--------------------------------------------------------------------

from Adrienne Pappas:
"From a HISTORY OF ROCKBRIDGE COUNTY [VA], there is a paragraph that says,
'five WALKUPs, James, Joseph, John, Margaret, and the wife of John GRAHAM, Jr.,
were brothers and sisters and came to the Little River about 1748. Capt. James
moved to Waxhaw settlement NC in 1755, where he was a large planter and
slaveowner. Samuel M., a grandson, was antiquarian of that state. Joseph, son of
John, was a lieutenant-governor of California'.
My connection is Joseph, who was a brother [to James]. Joseph's will is found
in Rockbridge Co., VA. His son, Robert, moved to Greenbrier Co., WV..."

Letter dated 19 Feb from E. M. Sharp to W. S. O'Neal (Enc #P-181) [sent to me by
Jean Danielson, 1 Dec 1994 - tmc]
"It is my idea the WALKUPS lived in old Augusta Co., VA, when they first moved
south..  At least we find some of them there in the records...
MORTON'S HISTORY OF ROCKBRIDE COUNTY VIRGINIA (formed from Augusta around
1777) says, "Five WALKUPS; James, Joseph, Margaret, and the wf of John GRAHAM
Jr., were brothers and sisters and came to Little River (Calfpasture section
apparently) around 1748.  Capt. James WALKUP moved to the Waxhaws in SC about
1755.  You see there is no mention of the MCWHORTERs here, and scarely anything
more is told of the WALKUP family.

George MCWHORTER

----------------------------

Letter dated 19 Feb from E. M. Sharp to W. S. O'Neal (Enc #P-181) [sent to me by
Jean Danielson, 1 Dec 1994 - tmc]
"...Geo. McWHORTER, Sr. 1730's-1805 met and married Eliz. WALKUP, sister of
James WALKUP of the Waxhaws who m. Margaret PICKENS....
It is my idea the WALKUPS lived in old Augusta Co., VA, when they first moved
south..  At least we find some of them there in the records...
...I have failed in finding Geo. MCWHORTER, Sr., in old Augusta Co., or just
across the mountains in old Albemarl. (now Amelia & Nelson counties) although
the Rev. pension of Geo. MCWHORTER, Jr. states he was born in VA in 1762, no
location given.  I believe it was a temporary stay in VA since traditions state
that Geo. MCWHORTER Sr. and a brother had planned to set up a business in
Charleston SC and in a shipwreck lost all their goods; then Geo. McW. Sr. moved
to the Waxhaws and began farming.  He lived near Capt. James WALKUP on Waxhaw
creek according to deed records and they exchanged some land.  His first mention
of NC was around 1769 when he bought about half of the plantation of Robert
CALDWELL...
MORTON'S HISTORY OF ROCKBRIDE COUNTY VIRGINIA (formed from Augusta around
1777) says, "Five WALKUPS; James, Joseph, Margaret, and the wf of John GRAHAM
