Don Fink to Terry McLean:
Edward and Elizabeth moved to Sullivan Co., Missouri in 1842 and in 1851
moved to Adair Co. Missouri, (Spring Creek in Morrow Township) 16 miles
northwest of Kirksville.Edward was of Irish and Dutch ancestry.
"E.M.C." Morelock was elected to the State Legislature in 1844 and was
successful in having an act passed February 14, 1845 organizing Sullivan
County, Missouri, which he named in honor of General Sullivan of Revolutionary
War fame and his own birthplace, Sullivan Co., Tenn. Mr. Morelock served
three terms in the State Legislatue. Some time between 1856 and 1859 Mr. Morelock purchased a newspaper from
Charles Jones called "The Enterprise". He also purchased the old "Democrat"
from John D. Foster and combined the two newspapers and edited and published
them under the name of "The Kirksville Democrat" until 1861.Mr. Morelock was a man of considerable prominence and for several years led a
public life. He was County and Circuit Clerk of Adair County (the two offices
were combined at that time) for six years. He also filled various township
offices and was Major of the State militia during times of general muster,
after which time he retired to his large farm and was one of the very
prosperous farmers of the county.Mr. Morelock was also an educator. While serving in the legislature he
advocated setting aside a certain number of townships throughout the state to
be sold or otherwise utilized for school purposes. He helped organize the
first free school in his district which was called the Morelock School.
Although he was one of the largest taxpayers in the county he fought for
higher taxes to support schools. In 1836 he issued a call "To all whom it may concern" to meet "on July 8th at
the school house camp ground near E.M.C. Morelock's for the purpose of
organizing a Sabbath School." The Reverend Cyrus Haynes assisted and a
Sabbath School was organized. Mr. Morelock's nephew, E.M.C. Ledford was
elected Superintendent; his youngest son, J.K.P.
Morelock, Assistant Superintendent; his brother-in-law, David R.
Pickens, Secretary; three other sons, William H., Enoch Benton, and David C.
were named respectively as teachers of the "first, second and third male
classes". Avery Wood was named teacher of the 4th male class.Major Morelock was always an active politician, affiliated with the Democratic
party. He was a prominent member of the Masonic Order. His wife, Elizabeth
died in 1845. Both she and her husband were members of the Cumberland
Presbyterian Church. At his death on June 11, 1888, Major Morelock's large
farm was divided among his five living sons creating a Morelock district
comprising the Morelock School, the Morelock Church and the Morelock Cemetery
where Major Morelock was buried.GEDCOM line 5956 not recognizable or too long:
