According to Sharpe, p. 157, Simpson originated in Pennsylvania, came south
and in 1830 was a merchant in Selma Alabama.
A John Allen Simpson is also shown as the son of John Simpson and Ann
Pickens Simpson, and is believed to be the most likely candidate as spouse of
Eliza Rebecca Miller, since they were first cousins and both families were in
the Selma Al area

1796; attended Doctor WaddellÆs Academy at Willington, Abbeville County, S.C., and was graduated from South Carolina College (now the University of South Carolina) at Columbia in 1817; studied law; was admitted to the bar in 1818 and practiced in Columbia, Edgefield, Lexington, Barnwell, and Newberry; member, State house of representatives; member, State Senate 1824-1833; aide on the staff of the Governor 1824; appointed judge of the session court in 1833; judge of the State court of common pleas 1835-1846; appointed and subsequently elected as a States Rights Democrat to the United States Senate

When her husband was appointed U.S. Ambassador to Russia by President

favorite of Czarina Catherine II, who was godmother to the PICKENSes' daughter.

[END]THE PICKENS FAMILY (1961), by E. M. Sharp:
p. 43. "... Francis W. PICKENS [married]... Lucy Pettway HOLCOMBE... [and
received an appointment as ambassador to Russian]. While in St. Petersburg
[Russia] their child was born. ... [the] daughter... was baptised in the Royal
Chapel, with the Empress acting as godmother. The Empress gave to her the full
name of: Eugenia Olga Neva Douschka PICKENS. Olga and Neva were names of two
of the Duchesses of the Court. Douschka is Russian for 'Little Darling'. It is
told that on her birthday for many years after the Civil War, presents were
sent to her from the Royal Family of Russia....
In Edgefield SC after the Civil War, The PICKENS lived in reduced
circumstances on their plantation in Edgefield. It was during the days of the
carpet baggers, and much unrest in the south. Eugenia rode with the REd Shirts
of Edgefield in helping put down lawlessness, and in aiding in the election of
Gen. Wade HAMPTON as the first southern Governor of SC after the War."
