From Karl Pepper:
"...John was born in McCracken County, KY 1843. He married Bell Z. DAVIS as it
is written on her gravestone... John and Bell had nine children...
John PICKENS joined the Confederate Army in Hopkinsville KY. Enlisting, Oct
13, 1861 in Company E 8th Regiment Ky. Vols (afterwards mounted). His actual
service is not well known. What is known is that he served at the battle of Fort
Donelson on the Tennessee River and surrendered when the fort was given up.
He appears on the rolls of prisoners of war at Camp Morton in Indiana. He was
exchanged at Vicksburg, Miss. around Sept. 1862. His condition was generally
debilitated from exposure and measles. After this time his service is unknown.
There is some indication that he was given a staff position as a courier but
nothing is positive. His Regiment was reformed and put under the command of
General Nathan Bedord FORREST.
He is buried with his wife Bell and three grandchildren in Wambles Chapel
Cemetery, about five miles out of Bloomfield [Missouri]..."
