ISRAEL PICKENS - Lawrence Co., Ala,
by Marjorie P. Parsly, 108 Hutchinson Place, Oak Ridge Tenn.
April 1986 [deceased, tmc - 1999]
ISRAEL PICKENS was descended from WILLIAM PICKENS, the immigrant to America..
. ISRAEL PICKENS, [oldest son of Capt. Joseph PICKENS, and his wife, Eleanor
PICKENS], born about 1763 in Abbeville (96) District, S.C. (See PICKENS FAMILIES
OF THE SOUTH by E. M. Sharp, pages 12-24)...
ISRAEL PICKENS was a nephew of Gen. ANDREW PICKENS, his father's brother, and
was a second cousin of the ISRAEL PICKENS who was governor of Alabama. ISRAEL
(Capt. JOSEPH's son) probably married about 1785-1790, but his wife's name is
not known. Perhaps she was a DAVIS. ISRAEL may have married a second time to
MARY ---, who was born about 1790 in North Carolina.
At least three of ISRAEL's brothers and sisters went to Livingston Co., Ky.,
around 1800 and lived there for a few years. ISRAEL may have lived there, too,
a while. JAMES DAVIS PICKENS, son of WILLIAM PICKENS who was probably ISRAEL's
son, stated in the 1880 census that his father WILLIAM was born in Kentucky, He
was more likely to have been born in South Carolina, but the statement reflects
the connection of these Pickenses with the state of Kentucky,
ISRAEL PICKENS's son, JOSEPH PICKENS, was born in South Carolina about 1800.
In 1803, in Pendleton District, S.C., ISRAEL administered his father's estate,
when his mother died, His brothers and sisters were:
1. JOHN PICKENS, born about 1770, died in Clarke Co., Ala,
2. ANDREW PICKENS, born about 1770, married MARGARET DOWDLE, died in Madison
Co., Ala, His wife went to live in Livingston Co., Ky., then back to ALA.
3. ANN PICKENS, born 1771, married JAMES DOWDLE, who died in Livingston Co.,
KY, 1808, She went to Franklin Co., Ala., by 1820.
4. WILLIAM PICKENS, born 1777, married MARTHA ANDERSON, went to Lawrence Co.,
Miss, about 1818.
5. JANE PICKENS, born about 1778, married ROBERT DOWDLE, Jr., She died in
Anderson Co., S.C. and he moved to Pickens Co., Ala.
6. JOSEPH PICKENS, went to Carroll, Co., Miss, then elsewhere,
7. SAMUEL PICKENS, may have died unmarried,
..............
ISRAEL PICKENS was attorney for the children of JAMES and ANN PICKENS DOWDLE
(No. 3 above) in 1820, when they received a share of the estate of Robert Dowdle
Sr., of Anderson Co., S.C., Some of their children lived in Giles Co., Tenn.,
where ISRAEL lived by 1812.
ISRAEL and WILLIAM PICKENS, his son, were on the 1812 tax list of Giles Co.,
Tenn., Also listed were his uncle ANDREW PICKENS (his mother's brother), and his
cousins WILLIAM G. and JAMES PICKENS, In 1815, ISRAEL and his uncle ANDREW
administered the estate of his cousin, WILLIAM G. PICKENS, and ISRAEL was also
administrator For his cousin JOHN G. PICKENS ISRAEL was replaced as road
overseer of the Big Creek road in Giles County in March 1817. In 1819, he
signed a petition there.
Probably in 1819, ISRAEL PICKENS moved to Lawrence Co., Ala. No land records
have been found for him (the first deed book far the county is missing), His
probable son, WILLIAM PICKENS "of Lawrence County", bought land there early in
1819, and ISRAEL may have been living on the property, Many of ISRAEL's
neighbors in the 1820 census had bought public lands in Township 7, Range 9
west, near WILLIAM's tract, In the census ISRAEL's family is as follows;
p. 26. ISRAEL PICKENS male: 2 over 21, 2 under 21
Females; 1 over 21 2 under 21 In the
1830 census, MARY (CUNNINGHAM) PICKENS, WILLIAM's widow, had some of the same
neighbors ISRAEL had in the 1820 census.
ISRAEL PICKENS was involved in several court cases in 1824 and 1825 in
Lawrence County, listed as plaintiff "for the use of" others, This seems to
indicate he was acting as a lawyer for others, as he had done in Giles Co.,
Tenn.
From census records and the probate records of his son, JOSEPH PICKENS,
ISRAEL's children were probably:
1. WILLIAM PICKENS, born about 1790-94, Married MARY A. CUNNINGHAM in
Tennessee about 1814, He was living in Alabama in 1819, but bought land in
Bedford Co., Tenn., from his in-laws in 1820 and was listed in the 1820
census there, He died in 1825 in Lawrence County,
2. JOSEPH PICKENS, born about 1800, South Carolina, died in 1855 Lawrence
Co., Ala. He probably did not marry, or if he did, had no children. When he
died, his brothers and sisters living in Lawrence County received his
property.
3. _____ PICKENS (a son), born 1810-1815,
4. ELIZABETH ANN PICKENS, born 1812 in Tennessee, married JOHN KEY in 1836.
5. _____ PICKENS (a son), born 1815-1820
6. MARTHA PICKENS, born 1815-1820 in Tennessee, married about 1833, THOMAS
GEWIN. They went to Chickasaw Co., Miss., by 1850. A descendant has a Bible
record naming ISRAEL PICKENS as her father.
7. ELEANOR (NELLIE) MINERVA PICKENS, born 12 March 1818 in Tennessee, married
about 1842, TANDY KEY, She died 12 July 1866,
8. JOHN KNOX PICKENS, born 1823 in Alabama, married SUSAN CLARK, 1846, died
1868.
9. ______PICKINS (a daughter), born 1825-1830.
.....................
There was a marriage ceremony performed by THOMAS PICKENS in Lawrence County
on 29 Sept. 1839. He might have been; a son of ISRAEL, No other record of him
has been found in the county.
ISRAEL PICKENS apparently died or moved away between 1825 and 1830, when he
was aged 62 to 67. JOSEPH PICKENS was head of the family in 1830. the census
record is as follows:
p. 251, 1, JOSEPH PICKENS (aged about 30)
males: 1 5-10 1 10-15 1 15-20 1 20-30
females: 1 5-10 2 10-15 1 15-20 1 40-50 1 slave ------[END this
