" ... Mary Sue PICKENS ... married Seth Thomas LILLY around 1890. They lived
in Texas with their children. Mary Sue PICKENS reported in the census that she
was born in Washington (State). I thought it might be an error, but I went to
the Washington Territorial Census Index for 1870 and found her listed. There
were several other PICKENS, who would be her family, but I haven't had a
chance to look at the actual census record yet, so I don't know her father's
name. What I'm trying to figure out is, how did this family happen to be in
Washington State in 1870 and then turn up in Texas later?
Any connections or information you might have? Jill Lilly"Mary Bevers membership application, Daughters of the Republic of Texas, Archer

p. 772. "PICKENS, John. m. Mary _____. While serving in the militia after
the fall of Charleston, he lost a mare in service. He was taken prisoner and
turned over to the Indians who put him to death. A.A.5933; S193."Letter dated 8 Mar 1994 from Lynne Ramsuar, included information sent to her
by Idus Davis (Enc #P-104):
"Law Office, W. B. SMITH, McRae, Georgia
HISTORICAL NOTES ON PICKENS NAME, as prepared by a descendant, W. V.
MONTGOMERY, who lived until last year at Selma Ala. [this document was proably
prepared in the early 1940's, as the accompanying correspondence Mr. Smith had
bears the date of 1943]
W. V. MONTGOMERY was a descendant of Israel PICKENS, brother of Captain
Andrew and his wife, Martha...
In the will of Andrew PICKENS, Sr., he names only four children. Andrew
(General); John, Joseph; Jean, who married Robert MILLER. Israel PICKENS,
Governor of Alabama was of this line.
[END]Day, COUSIN MONROE'S HISTORY OF THE PICKENS FAMILY:
p. 74-75. "John PICKENS, son of the old pioneer Andrew PICKENS, from the
best information obtainable, was lost at the seige of Ninety-Six, during the
Revolutionary War.
The estate of John PICKENS was paid for his services in the war as stub
entry No. 193, book S, of payments for services rendered in the war. The entry
reads as follows:
'Issued the 10 of Jun 1785, to ________ for estate of Mr. John PICKENS for
Forty One Pounds, eight shillings and Six Pence three farthings Sterling for
duty done in the Militia and a Mare lost as pr. Account audited ____'
Evidently from the fact that payment was made to the estate of John PICKENS,
he was killed during the war, and was a married man with family."
