Samuel Walkup married Elizabeth Guthre 1 Feb 1780. She was born 2 Dec 1761 and
died 19 Aug 1797 (ref. bible) and buried at the Cem. on Russel Coy Farm, about
four miles south of Richmond, KY. Someone wrote at one time and said they
thought her parents were Willima Guthrie & Elizabeth Barnett but never sent a
reference.
Samuel (of James & Margaret)& Elizabeth had the following children: Margaret,
James, William Guthree, Robert Alexander, Samuel & a child (ie stone that reads
"Elizabeth Walkup & Babe who departed this life 19 Aug 1797"
Samuel (of James & Margaret) then married Nancy Patterson and had the
following children: Thomas, Elilzabeth Guthree (I thought this was odd - the
middle name but ...), Sarah (aka Sally), Mary, John, James Patterson and Nancy.
The James (of Samuel of James)b. 2 July 1784 married Mary Huey & he died 28 Sept
1807 Madison Co., KY. James Patterson (of Samuel of James) was born 20 April

After that massacre in 1761, Ezekiel CALHOUN fled to the Waxhaws, the nearest
white settlement, for protection.
My grandfather [Gen. Andrew PICKENS] lived there, and then got acquainted with
my grandmother, who was the daughter of Ezekiel CALHOUN, and came back to the

husband arrived in this district (Abbeville), February 1756, and settled in a
group in what is now known as CALHOUN's Settlement, at the fort [sic] of the two

p. 35. "The CALHOUNS were among the first settlers in what is now Abbeville
County, SC. They with a few other families came from Virginia after the defeat
of General BRADDOCK and settled in 1756. In 1760 the Cherokee Indians went on
the warpath and the settlers in the Long Cane Community were warned by friendly
indians. They fled with their families and household belongings and were trying
to reach a fort on the South Carolina side [sic], opposite Augusta Georgia.
...they were attacked by Indians about a mile east of Long Cane Creek near
PATTERSONs Bridge.... 30 or more were killed and many others wounded and
scattered into the woods. Among some of those captured were children of William
CALHOUN, a brother of Ezekiel. Rebecca CALHOUN PICKENS was 15 years old at the
time of the massacre. Among those killed were Mrs. Catherine MONTGOMERY CALHOUN,
the mother of the four brothers who settled at Long Cane, and James CALHOUN, the
oldest of her sons.
The settlers fled back to the Waxhaw Settlements after this massacre, where
they remained until peace was once again established. In a year or two they
returned to Long Cane and [resumed] their life there...

Is this the James M. PICKENS that was named as guardian of the minor children

p. 21. Lawrence: Killing of Rev. James M. Pickens. Source: the Huntsville
Weekly Democrat, Vol 15, #17. 9 Feb 1881.
On Thursday last, Rev. James M. PICKENS, a minister of the Christian
(Campbellite) Church, and the Greenback candidate for Gov. of Alabama at the
election, was shot and killed by a man named Robert LETSON near Mountain Home
in Lawrence County.
Various and conflicting rumors, as to the circumstances of the killing, have
reached us. The most authentic statement seems to be that PICKENS and a
neighbor named DAVIDSON had been grinding an axe at Mr. FRENCH's and, when
returning home, LETSON overtook them and said to DAVIDSON, in substance: "You
have slandered my daughter, and if you don't take it back I will kill you."
DAVIDSON gave an evasive answer and LETSON, drawing a revolver, shot DAVIDSON
and was about shooting again when PICKENS struck up LETSON's arm with the
handle of the axe.
The revolver fell to the ground, LETSON tried to recover it, and PICKENS
tried to prevent him. However, LETSON got hold of the revolver and PICKENS was
scuffling with him to prevent his using it when LETSON shot PICKENS twice in
the chest or abdomen.
PICKENS ran off and LETSON followed him 30 or 40 yards and shot him twice in
the back, killing him instantly. DAVIDSON was badly wounded, but is likely to
recover.
LETSON went to Courtland and surrendered himself claiming, it is said, that
he acted in self-defense.
Mr. PICKENS was about 45 years old, a man of some ability, and esteemed by
his neighbors for his Christian character. We deeply regret his death,
especially under such sad circumstances." (Copied and contributed by Eulalia
Yancy Wellden)."PICKENS FAMILIELS OF THE SOUTH, by Sharp:
p. 92. "James Madison PICKENS was educated in college at Lexington KY.
Became a minister in the Christian church. Went on a preaching mission to
Alabam with Dr. J. J. BARCLAY, son-in-law of Alexamder CAMPBELL. While there
he met his wife and was married and returned to Kentucky Univ. Later became
president of Deshler Institute at Tuscumbia AL, then bought the Mountain Home
property and opened a boarding school. He met his death while trying to make
peace between two feuding men, and was shot and killed while trying to come
between them in peace..."Marjorie Milner, 'Additions to PICKENS FAMILIES OF THE SOUTH;
p. 2. "The preaching mission included northeastern Mississippi, where he met
his wife. After his death, the family lived with relatives mostly in Columbus,
Mississippi, until late 1886, when they moved to Birmingham. Mrs. PICKENS took
in boarders and the oldest son went to work. After her death, the younger
sister lived with the married one and hte brothers moved away.
[James and Mary] had 4 children who lived...
