John Thomas PICKENS

-------------------------------------------------------------

From Barbara Giddens to Terry McLean
Fri, 25 Sep 1998
"I finally got around to searching for something that I have been wanting. The
story behind John T. Pickens was not that he shot his brother-in-law Needham
Short but William Fox, his sister Georgia Pickens' husband. It happen in
Hennepin only 10 miles west of Davis, where I live. Hennepin is on the border of
two counties, Murray and Garvin. And Carter county is not but a few miles from
Hennepin.  In the Wynnewood ,Garvin county history book, John T. Pickens had a
jewery store in the late 1800's. This is how it is put in the newspaper word by
word and it is worded strangely.

THE EXAMINATION OF QE JOHN PICKENS
Arraigned before commissioner Robnett Yesterday and was acquitted.
Last Saturday at the little town of Hennepin John Pickens had a difficulty
with W.J. Fox and as a result Fox recieved wounds with a knife in the hands of
Pickens that resulted in his death.  Pickens was brought to the city and lodged
in the federal jail to await an examination of the affair by the authorities.
Yesterday he was arraigned before Commissioner Robinett and discharged from
custody.
The trouble started between Fox and his wife, who is the sister of Pickens and
Saturday while at the blacksmith shop of the former where witness said he had
gone to see if there could not be a settlment effected, that Fox cusd him and
assaulted him with a pair of red hot tongs.
The evidence in the case showed that it was purely a case of self defense and
after examing the witnesses Judge Butler discharged the prisoner.  Attorney
McGuire and Robinett appeared for the defense."

Pauline Adams runs Adams Grocery in Pickens; she is a granddaughter of John T.
Pickens. Jewell Pickens Hannah runs a chicken farm in Pushmataha Counth just
west of County Line Cemetery with husband John;  she also is a g/daughter. John
T. and his son, John, (Jewell's father) are buried in the Cemetery. In
conversation, Jewell mentioned 'Ruby' as another child of John T. in addition to
those I hold."   [SOURCE:  Jack Reynolds GEDCOM]

John T became a freight hauler in the vicinty of Ardmore IT, and was injured in
a runaway accident.  Rachel had relatives in McCurtain Co, and they moved there.
They build a log barn in which they lived, had a grist mill and store, and
where John T. became the first postmaster of a small community which was named
Pickens, after him.  The community still exists, and descendants of John T.
still reside there.  [Jack Reynolds, Enc #P-040].
