Subject: Jonathan Pickens Will
I received this will of Jonathan Pickens, Jr. from Barbara Giddens today.
Naturally, it was manuscript. I tried my best to decipher it correctly.
Barbara may have been given this by Mayme Welker and believed this to be the
will of Jonathan, Sr.  The sons named in the will, Jonathan R. and Jeremaih H.,
would make it look like Jonathan Jr. to me.

Will     [from Jack R.]
Regarding your observation that the supposed date of the Will is 1825, and the
supposed date of death of Jonathan Jr. is 1824:  According to Sharp, Jonathan
PICKENS, Jr. died "ca. 1824," and he does not say where he got this, adding only
that he was not included in the 1830 census.
The handwriting in the Will appears to have been done by a doctor who took a
little time off from writing prescriptions. "Five" is really the best I can do
with the 1825 date on the Will. It's hard to say. Formation of the beginning
letters "T/t" and "F/f" is inconsistent. It appears to be a four letter word
beginning with either F or T. The last two letters of the word are not the same
(ruling out "three" to me). The second and third letters appear to be "i" and
"v."  The final letter is ambiguous.
So I guess my conclusion is that Jonathan Jr. died at least a year later than
Sharp said he did. Even if the word were "four" instead of "five," Jonathan
states in the beginning of the will that he is "in good health," leaving the
date of death still in question.
Thanks for noticing the difference in dates."

From Jack Reynolds to Terry McLean, 1995:
"A notation by Mrs. Ruth Kaiser of San Mateo CA based on PICKENS FAMILIES OF
THE SOUTH, gives the vitals on Gabriel as b. abt 1820 d. abt 1880. These dates
are in conflict with those of his son, William Pickens, b. abt 1804,  d. abt
1865. There may have been a transcription error, these dates, belonging to
someone else in the immediate line. The same notation gives the birth date of
his wife, Polly (Mary) as being abt 1773, and so it is more likely that he was
born at about that time.

PICKENS FAMILIES OF THE SOUTH, E. M. Sharp:
 p. 85. Gabriel Pickens, son of Jonathan PICKENS, Senior [was] b. ca. 1770 in
South Carolina - d. ca. 1847 in Hardin Co., Tenn. [He married] Polly (Mary) ____
ca. 1790 in Abbeville Dist., SC.
She was b. in 1773 in Virginia - died ca. 1855 (in 1850 she was 73 and was
dead before 1860). The census of 1820, 1830 and 1840 of Hardin County shows that
he and Polly had at least 11 children.  The names of eight of them are known.
The two oldest daughters are not known and no doubt had married soon after
coming to Hardin County. Those known appear to be:
[he here names Zachariah, Margaret, William, Patsey, Elizabeth, Lydia,
Isariah, and Hannah]...
Gabriel Pickens was in Hardin County, TN in 1820, when the census was made. He
had lived at one time in Georgia, as several of his children are known to have
been born in Georgia in 1804 and 1805, Izariah was born in 1815 in Georgia, and
Lydia was born in Tennessee in 1816, according to 1850 census. Gabriel probably
moved to Lincoln Co., Tennessee, about 1816, and to Hardin County around 1818.
He is shown in old court minutes in 1819 as being in the county. He received
land which was surveyed for him on Rogers Creek, which remained in the family,
and probably still belongs to descendants.
The following outline of this family has been reconstructed almost wholly from
census records, deeds, court minutes, and marriage records in the court house.

E-mail message grom Jack Reynolds to Terry McLean, 23 Oct, 1996:
"Hi, Terry... here are some comments [on the GEDCOM you recently sent me...]
Gabriel (m. Mary/Polly). Sharp gives his DOD as 1847. "MOVING FORWARD - HARDIN
COUNTY HISTORY 1870-1930" (per Tony Hayes) gives an earlier date:
'Gabriel moved to Tennessee from South Carolina about 1810. The Pickens family
has been successfully traced back to Scotland in the early 1600s. They have
included in their number diplomats, senators, congressmen, and governors. The
Hardin County branch was for the most part begun by Gabriel and his brother,
Jonathan. Sometime around 1841, Gabriel passed away, leaving his widow and the
maiden daughters, Martha and Hannah..."

I am a descendant of a Jeremiah Harrison who lived in Ga from 1790 until the
1820s, then moved to Lawrence Co, Ms.  He had sons named James, William,
Greenberry, and Jeremiah, Jr all b in Ga. He was b c1769 in and on the 1880
census his son William (70) indicated his father was b in NC.   There are
quite a few Jeremiah Harrisons but I have found none b abt 1769.
Your posting of 3/20/1998 abt Lydia Harrison, reportedly the dtr of a
Jeremiah Harrison who died in Harden Co, Tn, is interesting.  I wonder if
that Jeremiah had a son named Jeremiah.  I would surely appreciate it if you
would let me know of any further info you have learned abt the children and
ancestry of Lydia's father.

copied in Hardin Co.,TN records and only the first five children were named as
