MCCALL, GILMORE, PICKENS. Interested in two brothers who were in Bedford Co.,
Tn. in the 1820 census. They lived on the north side of the Duck River. Samuel
MCCALL had married Elizabeth G. PICKENS in Maury Co., Tn. in 1817. Thomas MCCALL
married Ann GILMORE and is found in the 1820 and 1830 Bedford Co census.
Tradition says he went to Mississippi. Where?

"... Samuel married Elizabeth Pickens in 1817 in Maury Co., Tn as you
presumably know. The son called James Robert above is in some other places
called James Ross McCall, so I am unsure which is correct but suspect it is
Ross. Hannah Malvina never married and died in 1850 in Marshall Co., Tn. There
is another proven daughter: Mary Parthenia who married Zacheus Wallace in
Marshall Co., Tn.  I feel fairly confident of a third named Catherine who
married James M. Hardison in Marshall Co in 1837.
Do you have a probable birth date for Elizabeth Pickens.  She seems to have
been much younger than Samuel,  but there is no evidence he had any children by
a former wife.  I have her parents as Andrew and Elizabeth Patterson Pickens.
Does that agree with your material.

Samuel McCall's wife was Elizabeth Picken.
Samuel McCall's father was James McCall [sometimes referred to as Sr.] and his
mother was either Rebecca Kelley or Janet [sometimes spelled Jenet] Harris.
Jenet Harris was the oldest daughter of
James Harris, the town Harrisburg, Pa. is named for.
Excellent source of information is "Men of Mark in Georgia" with an article
written by Thomas McCall in 1829 documenting the passage of the
McCall/Harris/Calhoun families from Scotland thru Ireland into Pa., and then
into Virginia, and then to North Carolina before the Revolution. Then the family
was given land for Revolutionary service, primarily in Georgia. Anyway, Thomas
connects the travels and who married who and who had who's children quite well
in the article.

I have James McCall [b. Ireland 1721, d. 1797 York Co., S.C.] arried Janet
Harris [dau of John Harris] in 1738.
Their children include Samuel [married Elizabeth Picken], James Jr, William,
Polly, and Thomas. Was JOHN McCALL Father of James and brother Francis?

was located in his day in a fairly thickly settled area, north of Moscow Tenn.
on the north side of Wolf River. Since his day it is almost abandoned and is
largely just ranches and forests. The church has long since been moved to Moscow
and the cemetery is grown up in woods and out in a large cow pasture. The
ministers shaft, however, is still upright, about 15 feet tall, erected by his
loving congregation. His wife was Sallie RUTLEDGE who he married on Sept. 10,
1818 in Giles Co. Tenn. They had 8 children..."
"The Rev. Israel PICKENS was converted and decided to enter the Ministry while
he was working with the Cumberland Presbyterian Mission in what is today Monroe
Co., MS about 8 miles west of Amory. It was a school called Charity Hall,
intended to educate CHICKASAW youth. His brother Andrew PICKENS was a teacher
there as was a daughter of Andrew. Both of them died one summer of fever. During
a revival meeting held in that community Israel Sidney made his decision for the
ministry and was licensed to preach. He moved to Fayette County [TN] about the
same time his father did and was pastor of the one church for 40 years. He was
much beloved by everybody in west TN. and a book has been published about his
life and work which is in Memphis Public Library. He had a brother named Robert
B. PICKENS who also lived near him. They were always attending some church
meeting together and were well known in C.P. circles as well as other
churches...
A few miles west [of Moscow, TN] is a Cumberland Presbyterian Church still
very active where ... some of Rev. Isreal PICKENS' family are buried. Susan A.
PICKENS, daughter of Israel Sidney... is buried there [as is her husband, Hugh

Much has been written in Cumberland Presbyterian Histories about him. He was
converted at a camp meeting at Cotton Gin Port, Miss. in 1820 and became
employed as a missionary at 'Charity Hall' where his brother Andrew died in
1824. Became a minister of the C.P. Church, served as evangelist for many years,
much beloved in west Tennessee. He moved to Fayette Co. Tenn about 1832, served
as pastor of Shiloh Pres. Church for the rest of his life. They were parents of
