==========================================================================

From Bob Thompson:
After marrying Jane Simmons, James came to middle Tennessee and opened up an
inn in the Chestnut Mound area which was known as Raulston's Stand. He
successfully operated with his brother-in-law, Mark Young (Ruth Raulston's
husband), his inn, a powder mill, a distillery and a very large farm.
In 1801 James Roulston was a delegate to Knoxville, then the Capitol of the
state and was instrumental in the enactment of the necessary legislation to
create a new county.  This was named in honor of Andrew Jackson....
In 1808 Roulston moved from the old Roulston Stand to Swqachee Valley and
there entered, with three of his sons, twenty thousand acres of land.  He was
one of the first settlers of the valley and soon became one of the leading men
of the frontier area of this newly established state. He built his home on
what was later found to be the state line between Tennessee and Alabama when
the boundaries were surveyed in 1817.  Colonel Roulston's log house was
located only a short distance from the indian villages of Long Island,
Nickajack and Running Water. There existed at this time much unrest among the
chickamaugas because the resented the loss of their land to the incoming white
man.
Roulston was called upon by Jackson to organize his countryside for an
expedition against the Creek Indians in the great bend of the Tennessee River.
In 1809 he was commissioned  Lieutenant Colonel, commandant of the Eighteeen
Regiment of Jackson County. Again he was called by General Jackson to serve
under his command in the War of 1812. In November 1814, Colonel Roulston was
commission Colonel in command of the Third Regiment of Tennessee, which was
mustered in in southern Tennessee and was a part of General William Carroll's
Division. He was ordered to proceed to New Orleans as quickly as possible in
order to defend that area against the British. Colonel Roulston and his
Regiment bore the brunt of the British advance in the Battle of New Orleans
and out of his Regiment over one hundred men were casualties. Upon their
return to Tennessee, Colonel Roulston terminated his military service.  He
went back to the vast holdings of land located n what later became Jackson
County, Alabama and Marion County, Tennessee....
He was a personal friend of Andrew Jackson...In 1828 Colonel Roulston
declared his domicile in Alabama, as his home was built on the state line. He
was elected and served as representative of Jackson County to the legislature
in Montgomery. However much of his time was spent surveying and looking after
his extensive land entries in this section....
Colonel Roulston died on August 7, 1844 and he was buried in the old
graveyard. His grave is marked by a bronze plaque erected by the Daughters of
the War of 1812.

"503 S. Carancahiea, Corpus Chritsi, Texas May 17, 1962 Mr. Sidney
Pickens, Box 316, Morris, NY.
Dear Mr. Pickens: Your letter of May 12 was received today. I hasten to
answer, because I am so very anxious to receive information on my gr.
gr.grandfather Andrew PICKENS b. 1-6-1753, VA. d. 9-15-1844 Fayette Co Tenn.
served in Amer. Rev. under Gen. Andrew PICKENS, his first cousin, in S.C. was
wounded, was dismissed from service as result when recovered to a certain extent
his insistence to rejoin army was agreed upon. He served in capacity as driving
a baggage wagon remainder of war. His pension application S3697, which was
granted, states facts stated above.
His first wife's name is unknown to us. His second wife was Margaret GALLISPIE
b 1763 d 8-18-1830. They m. 1790 S.C. came to Tenn. 1807. We do not exact proof
this Andrew b. 1753 was our gr.gr. grandfather. Mr Sharp of Tenn. a Pickens
desendant and prof. genealogist says it is only circumstancial, but he seems
positive its so.
My gr grand father we know was William PICKENS b. 11-1782 in S.C...
[married] Margaret HARRIS... was dau. of Sarah (Sally) HAMILTON and Dr. John
HARRIS... Sarah HAMILTON was the dau. of Maj. Andrew HAMILTON b. VA. d S.C. and
his wife Jane McGARRA b. Penn. d. S.C...
... Children of Andrew b 1753 - dates of birth tell if Margaret Gillespie's
children or first wife's... [signed] (Miss) Earle Clyde Pickens.

PICKENS FAMILIES OF THE SOUTH, by E. M. Sharp:
 p. 48. "Fort Independence. This old fort is mentioned in the pension
applications of Andrew PICKENS, William PICKENS and William Gabriel PICKENS,
also in the Draper interview with Andrew PICKENS.... Both tradition and its site
indicate that it was built on PICKENS land. John and Gabriel obtained grants on
Great Rocky Creek in Granville Co., SC in 1765. The grants show that they joined
each other and lands of Matthew GILLESPIE. The old site is very near
Lowndesville, in western Abbeville County, SC.
...William PICKENS of Maury County Tenn told of assisting in the erection of
this fort. William Gabriel PICKENS stated that he was there under the command of
his brother Captain John PICKENS who was left in charge of the fort. The fort
had already been built when the Cherokee War started in 1776 as related by
Andrew PICKENS of Fayette Co., TN. Families from the surrounding area fled to Ft
Independence at the first signs of trouble, and when Andrew arrived safely his
wife ran out and embraced him for she thought he had been killed.
Mr. H. L. Carlile of Calhoun Falls, SC who has done years of research on land
plats etc,... [stated] I... was told that the [original] grant was from the King
of England to General Andrew PICKENS. I doubt that the General ever had anything
to do with it as his land all lay further east. I believe it was another Andrew
PICKENS, or John PICKENS who was the first owner.'
Mr. Carlile has the truth of it, as this land was granted to Andrew PICKENS,
the man who came to Fayette Co., Tenn. who obtained a grant about 1784 adjoining
his own land, which he had doubtless obtained from his father's place in the
settlement of the estate about 1770.
This Fort Independence has sometimes been confused with another fort of the
same name that was erected in Georgia, for the same purposes. It was the fort on
Great Rocky Creek near Lowndesvelle, SC that was of such concern to the PICKENS
soldiers, for it protected their own families."
 p. 49.  [supporting evidence that Andrew is son of John & Eleanor, rather than
of Robert Pike PICKENS]
"...Traditions in PICKENS family of Livingston Co., KY state that  when
William Gabriel PICKENS, son of John & Eleanor PICKENS moved there [KY] in 1803,
Andrew PICKENS, a brother of Wm. Gabriel, came along, but he returned to SC and
later moved to TN..."
"In 1806 Andrew and family moved to Tennessee. He settled first in the Sims
Settlement on Elk River, with many other settlers believing himself to be in
Tenn. This proved to be Indian Land. The Indians complained to the govt. who
sent troops and moved the settlers from the Indian Lands. Andrew then went to
Giles Co., Tenn. and settled on Lynn Creek in 1807. He and son James, with many
others removed by troops signed a petition for redress for damages and losses,
which is in files of Mississippi Territory in Jackson Miss. Published in
Carter's 'Territorial Papers'. Giles County was not actually formed until 1809
from Maury Co., Tenn. Maury County formed 1807 from Williamson Co., Tenn. Three
of Andrew's children's marriages are recorded in Williamson County, Tenn., and
perhaps one in Maury Co. Records of Giles County burned. About 1828 Andrew moved
to Fayette Co., Tenn. where he died in 1844, his wife in 1830. Andrew PICKENS
was the father of 12 children, 8 sons and 4 daughters..."
In 1833 Lymon C. Draper, then a budding newspaper publisher at Pontotoc,
Mississippi came and interviewed [Andrew PICKENS of Fayette Co., TN]. Draper was
then beginning his classic collection of material on the revolution and Indian
Wars. Draper later went to Madison Wisconsin where he established and built up
the Historical Archives of Wisconsin to be a model for all other states. For
PICKENS interview see: Appendix No. II, this book.
 p. 58. NOTES FROM A PUBLISHED BIOGRAPHY OF REV. ISRAEL SIDNEY PICKENS,
PUBLISHED SHORTLY AFTER HIS DEATH IN 1876 - FURNISHED BY THE LATE MR. IRA
PICKENS OF NEWPORT, ARK. 1941.
"Mr. PICKENS (Israel Sidney)...[son of] Andrew and Margaret PICKENS, who were
pious and exemplary members of the Presbyterian Church, but after moving to
Tennessee, they joined the Cumberland Presbyterian Church in the communion of
which they spent the remnant of their long and useful lives. Andrew PICKENS,
Esq., was a soldier in the Revolutionary War, and received a wound in his knee
at the famous battle of Seneca River. He was tendered a discharge, but
preferring to remain in the service of his country, he was appointed to drive a
baggage wagon until he was able to bear arms again. He survived the war and
lived in the enjoyment of his country's peace... for more than fifty years; but
he was always lame from the effects of the wound. The fruits of his marriage
with Miss Margaret GILLESPIE was twelve children, eight sons and four daughters;
all of whom became members of the Presbyterian Church, except the three youngest
- two sons, Robert and Israel Sidney, and one daughter, who became members of
the Cumberland Presbyterian Church. Andrew PICKENS, Esq. lived to the great age
of ninety-one years and departed this life Sept. 15, 1844. His wife lived to the
good age of 67 years and died August 13, 1830. Their home for many years before
their death was with their youngest son, Israel Sidney."
"(From Material in Appendix II and III we know that [Andrew] was married twice
and Margaret GILLESPIE his second wife was born in 1763 and was only 13 years
old when he married in 1776 to his first wife. There is evidence that his first
wife was also a GILLESPIE and may have been a duaghter of Matthew GILLESPIE)
[this is probably in error - SEE MARRIAGE NOTE, above - tmc]
"While living in Giles County Tennessee, Andrew PICKENS was a candidate for an
elected office. During the campaign some rumors were spread abroad by one
Quinton SHANNON that in South Carolina, Andrew PICKENS was a Tory. Feeling that
it caused his defeat he sued SHANNON for trespass in 1813-1814. The case was
finally settled out of court by a committee of arbitration. When Andrew PICKENS
applied for his pension in 1833 he sent along with his application fourteen
pages of transcript of this case as further proof of his war services, and of
his defense against all rumors to the contrary. This transcript contains no
family information, and no additional military facts."

PICKENS FAMILES OF THE SOUTH, by E. M. Sharp (1963):
p. 52.  "The SHANNONs and MCKNIGHTs are a numerous family that settled in
Davidson and Williamson Counties as early as 1790. The two families were
intermarried in various ways. Many descendants went out from this part of
Tennessee to Kentucky, to western Tennessee, to Arkansas, and to Mississippi. It
will be noted that four of Andrew PICKENS' oldest children... married into the
SHANNON-MCKNIGHT families..."
