Donald, My information shows Ann Henley Garrison born May 17, 1804 in Franklin
County, Georgia died July 28, 1851 in Auburn, Alabama married to John Patterson
Gillespie Feb 1, 1821 probably in Carroll County, Georgia to be the daughter of
Caleb and Sarah Fleming Garrison. This would account for one of their sons being
named Fleming. John Patterson was born September 10, 1802 in Georgia and died
September 9, 1867 in Houston, Texas.

Found additional census info that shows Martha, widow of GALLOWAY, living with
her parents I assume as follows:
1870/Franklin Co GA, Middle River Township:
GILLESPIE, Milton 56/gA
Melissa 48/GA
Berthema ? 25/GA
Harriet 23/GA
Asa W 16/GA
Cordelia 14/GA
Jane A 12/GA
William 10/GA
Milton 7/GA
GALLOWAY, Martha 30/GA
Asa N 10/GA
John H 8/GA
William V? 6/GA
Leonidas 5/GA
This is most certainly the same Martha F GILLESPIE who married William R
GALLOWAY, but this census info presents a problem, for if the CSA records are
correct (which we assume they are) then William R GALLOWAY enlisted Sept 1862
and died Sept 1863.
Thus the last two children of Martha may not the the children of William.
William V? b ca 1863 COULD POSSIBLY be the son of WIlliam, but the last one,
Leonidas, b ca 1864 could not be.
Does anyone now recognize these GILLESPIES in GA?

respect to the memory of one so near & dear unto you. To one who of all his
brothers had the greatest affection for you. You can perhaps already divine

he had almost reached his "three score & ten". He was in his 67th year. He
died of congestive fever on the 22nd of Sept....

which I am sorry to say all the old men about here & all the WALKUPs that I
have ever seen unfortunately possessed & that was he was too fond of ardent
spirits & was sometimes overcome to his great mortification & sorrow by this
destroyer of the happiness of men...

"Mr. Sam'l WALKUP, Richmond Kentucky North Carolina Union County
by the politeness of Rev. S. C. MILLEN 21 Sept 1844 My Dear Uncle
Sam:
Rev. S. C. MILLEN, the bearer of this letter to you is an associate reformed
Seceder minister and is on his way to Lexington to attend the session of Synod.
He preaches in this neighborhood at Tirsah & Shiloh churches & as he passes
near you my father got me to write to you by him, if convenient he will call
on you & stay all night.
We have had much sickness here for the last few years & uncommonly much for
the last two falls. My fathers family white & black have been very much
afflicted with sickness both years. About a week since my dear sister Jane
died of fever. She was the most dutiful & affectionate daughter, the most
loved & kind sister, the most agreeable & candid friend & the most meek and
pious Christian; she was 21 years old had never been married though she had
many suitors & was beautiful and amiable. Just two years ago my oldest sister
Elizabeth DUNN died which I think I informed you of. My father has had 21
children and out of that number has now only 8 living, 5 daughters and 3 sons
- He has two sons & two daughters by his first wife and three daughters & one
son by his last wie, his last son born last January he calls Henry Clay for
your gallant statesman, the candidate for the presidency. My father's health
is better for the last two years then it has been before but it is very much
broken. He still goes down to his mill and plantation every day which is about
half a mile from Papa. I am farming to myself & attending to business as a
lawyer. My brother William is staying with papa & farming with him. He is
very industrious, intelligent & affectionate & everybody thinks very highly of
him. Uncle Israel WALKUP's family are all married or dead: 3 sons viz: David,
Samuel, & James are living & doing tolerably well. Davy is very sick at this
time & his family have been a great deal sick for the last two years. He has
six children living and four dead. Samuel lost his 2nd wife last week, he has
five children. James has no children. There are four daughters of Uncle
Israel's family all married, viz: Margaret, Elizabeth, Nancy & Eliza; they are
doing tolerably well. Uncle Joe WALKUP's family consists of two sons Robert &
James, who are in Tennessee somewhere, but we have not heard from them for
several years. There are five daughters of Uncle Joe's family viz: Jane KERR,
Nancy McMURRAY, Elizabeth BELK, Betsy HOEY, & Emeline, all married but the
last who lives with KERR who is clerk of the Superior Court of Mecklenburg
County & tavernkeeper in Charlotte & all are doing very well but the one who
married BELK. Israel DAVIS' widow & children moved off to Tennessee &
Mississippi & father has bought their lands lying west of DAVIS' branch &
joining his plantation. Robert DAVIS and his wife are dead, the latter died
this last winter, they left only four children, one of whom (Israel) married a
daughter of Col. Thos HUEY, who was a son of old James HUEY; young Israel
DAVIS' wife died yesterday. The old stock of HUEYs are all dead & almost
every other old person is dead some of the old MCCAINs, CARNS, NESBITs & old
Sam GIVINS are nearly all who remain yet living... [discussion of crops and
politics]

"Mr. Samuel WALKUP, Richmond Union County, NC
Madison County, Kentucky Dec. 20, 1845 Dear
Uncle Samuel:
Although I have never seen you I feel anxious to hear from you & would be
very much gratified to see you, my oldest uncle & for whom I was named....
I will endeavor to give you what news I can.
I am instructed in the first place by my own dear father to write you that
he is enjoying excellent health at the present time & has been quite well
since he last wrote you, except an attack of fever he had last fall. He looks
fresh and hearty & is able to attend to his daily business; scarely a day
passes that he does not go up to his mill & plantation on the creed. He
wishes to be affectionately remembered by you his dear brother & by your
family & if you are still living he hereby earnestly requests you to write him
a letter ...
The balance of our family I believe I may say are well, my brother William
(Papa's most beloved son & who is most worthy of being loved, for he stays
with him and and is very industrious & affectionate, attends to all his
business, & he not only the most beloved by my father & all the family, but
most esteemed by all the friends & neighbors & acquaintances as being honest,
sensible, prudent, good dispositioned young ma, but he has been sick with
chills & fever most all this fall & winter, but is now recovered all but his
strength - he had an attack of fever the first of September & has had chills
ever since until lately. The rest of the family are all well. I am living
close by & my oldest sister Mary & my niece Eugenia Ingram are living with me.
Sister Mary has been sick this fall & is naturally of delicate health, but is
now well as usual; so are the rest of my family white & black. I am still
unmarried. I studied law & have a pretty fair practice for a young man. I
have also for the past two years been farming & do pretty fair business in
that way...
Thousands have moved to the West because corn was so scarce & dear here, to
avoid want & starvation from famine. The country has been sickly & many have
died & are still dying. My oldest sister Elizabeth died about 3 years ago
which I believe father wrote to you about & last year sister Jane aged 21 died
also. There has been no deathes in the family since, my father we now have a
little negro boy who is very sick of Typhus fever & will probably died in a
day or two & as this disease is catching and very fatal probably some of the
rest of us will take it and die too, but at present except this little negro
we are all in fine health and doing very well.
Uncle Israel WALKUP's family are all married & are doing pretty well. Uncle
Joseph WALKUP's family are also all married, but his youngest daughter & all
are doing very well. We have not heard for three or four years from Uncle
Joe's two sons Robert & James. They were in or about Nashville Tennessee &
were only gettinga long tolerable. If you write we should be glad to hear
what has become of Aunt Polly HARVEY & her family. Uncle Sam HUEY, her
brother, died this fall, a good and pious Methodist, Aunt Nancy WILLIAMS also
and two of her daughters died about a year ago....
[political discussion and questions]...
My dear uncle... [we] do sincerely hope that these lines may find you all
enjoying, in the midst of your families, health, peace, prosperity & happiness
& I am sure all join with me in these good wishes for a Christmas or at least
a New Year's gift, about which time this will reach you from your nephew &
brother, Yours ... Samuel H. WALKUP & Robt. WALKUP P.S. Dear Uncle since the
writing of the within I saw cousin FINDLY, your grandson & he can tell you all
the news... most of the news in this letter will be unecessary as we have seen
Findly WALKUP & he can tell you the balance...

It has been very sickly in this county & many old people have died. Perhaps
you may have known the old Revolutionists, Old Andy WALKER died about two
years ago, old Sam GIVENS also died last spring, & old Hugh FORBES about a
year ago, old Thos KIRKPATRICK is dead near Charlotte. Take our relations
generally they are tolerably well. Uncle Israel's only tolerable. My oldest
sister living was married in July to Cousin Joe DOUGLASS, son of Uncle Joe
DOUGLASS who married my mother's sister, the rest of us are about home &
unmarried....

COMMENT: If Ann was born in 1828 and had two children by the time she reached
Augusta Co., VA in 1740, she was a very young mother, or perhaps the first two
were twins? When her first husband died in 1748, he named 3 children - still
making Ann a very young mother to have had three children by the age of 20.
Could the Jane and John SCOTT that came with Ann and her husband to VA be a
brother and sister to Samuel, rather than his children?===========================================================================
PICKENS FAMILIES OF THE SOUTH:
p. 109. Mrs. Ann (OLIVER) SCOTT, widow of Samuel SCOTT became [the second
wife of William PICKENS] in 1752. We believe she was a daughter of Aaron
OLIVER, who died in Augusta County in 1768 leaving a will in which he named
his daughter Ann PICKENS. The will was witnessed by Abram PICKENS. Because of
this some have made Ann PICKENS the wife of Abraham PICKENS who died in Maury
Co., Tenn. in 1815. This has been proven not to be true, and indeed it is
doubtful if the Abraham PICKENS who witnessed the will was the one who was son
of Gabriel PICKENS for he was too young even to be in the revolution.
Ann SCOTT, was the widow of Samuel SCOTT who made his declaration before the
Orange County [VA] Court in 1740 naming his wife Ann, son John and Jane. The
will of Samuel SCOTT signed March 16, 1748 names wife Ann, son John, Daughter
Mary, Daughter Jean. Ann refused to abide by the will and the estate was
administered later, with her husband William PICKENS serving as guardian for
her minor children."TINKLING SPRING: HEADWATER OF FREEDOM:

NOT PROVEN TO BE A CHILD OF THIS FAMILY.
Sharp places him as a possible son of Aaron PICKENS of Shelby Co., but his age
would make him more likely to be Aaron's brother or cousin.UPDATE: 1998-02-28

PICKENS FAMILIES OF THE SOUTH, by E. M. Sharp:
p. 116. "John PICKENS of Shelby County, Kentucky was likely a son of Aaron
PICKENS. Shelby county was formed from Jefferson County in which Aaron was given
his land grant in 1784. The census of 1810 for Shelby Co., KY shows the family
of John PICKENS as follows:
1 male above 45 - John PICKENS himself
1 female 26-45 - his wife
1 female 16-26
1 male 16-26
2 females 10-16
2 females 0-10
owned 1 slave
Records of Shelby County give the marriage of Jane PICKENS to John DAVIS, on
November 25, 1806. She may have been daughter of John PICKENS.
The ... family of Lemuel PICKENS of Orange County Indiana seems without much
doubt to be from John PICKENS of Shelby County, and likely descendants of Aaron
PICKENS..."I think the John PICKENS mentioned in the following land grants is most likely
to be the son of this family - the records of land grants to Samuel and James
seem to be consistent with John's as to time and place - tmc.
