wife.[author has handwritten note here saying 'No', and crossed out the 'second
wife' - tmc] Her dates in one account are given as 1758-1839. Some have tried to
make his wife NANCY CRAIG, which may or may not be true. We can find NO
justification for this claim. An old article published about him states:
"WILLIAM PICKENS, 1748-1835, Patriot, Soldier and Indian Spy. William Pickens,
son of Irish Immigrant Gabriel and Zerubiah Pickens, was born in Augusta Co.
VA., Oct. 5, 1748. About 1763 he and his father pioneered Long Canes, Abbeville,
S.C. From 1776 to 1780 he served with voluntary forces of his cousin General
Andrew PICKENS, in frontier campaigns against British and Tories and Allied
Cherokee Indians. In 1807 he pioneered Maury County, Tenn. with his wife Jane
(1758-1839), children and grandchildren and settled Pickens Hollow - helping to
establish Marshall County, Mooresville and Bear Creek Church. In 1834 he was
awarded a veteran's pension, #S-3699 for his military services during the war
for American Independence. He died May 6, 1835." (See: Appendix No. IV)
"When William PICKENS arrived in Tennessee he obtained title to land on Globe
Creek in 1807. It was at that time all in Williamson County, Tennessee and the
first deeds are recorded there. In 1807 Maury County was organized. Maury County
records are full of deeds, court minutes, marriages pertaining to this family.
In 1836 when Marshall County was organized, the PICKENS homestead on Globe Creek
fell into the new county and subsequent records are mostly in Marshall County.
He died the year before Marshall County was formed and his will appears in Maury
Co., Will book X, p. 331.
