According to the Wallace and Clara Bryan History written by Hazel Bryan: "My father, Wallace S. Bryan, came to Decatur County and purchased land 4 1/2 miles north of Traer in March 1906. He married by mother, Clara Bryan, September 4, 1878 at Winthrop, Missouri and they made their home on a farm in Jackson County, Kansas." She continues "In the fall of 1907, father, Ben, and two cousins, Ralph Bryan and Jay Scofield, came out in covered wagons. They built a shanty to live in and a barn for livestock before starting the house. Father returned to Jackson County bringing back Lena. Later Newt, Gene Bryan, a cousin, and Laura and her family, the Joe Graggs, came. The Graggs made their home east of the Bryan homeplace. Mahala, Alice, and I came the summer of 1909 while mother stayed to care for her stepmother until her death. We returned to Holton (Jackson County) with mother to attend school for a term while she disposed of inherited property. We returned to the farm to settle in our new home and to attend Fairview District 98. During this time George Bryan, a cousin from Oklahoma, did the finishing work on the house. My sisters and I came down with the measles and as I remember the smell of the paint and varnish was almost unbearable. Due to father's illness we moved a fourth mile north of Traer and attended school in Traer. Laura kept house for Ben on the homplace, Lena married Pete Harris and moved to the northwest place, and Vina and Max Gragg made their home with us at Traer. In March of 1912 the folks traded the house near Traer for the Payne place. We girls drove to school with a horse and buggy. We would take it to the livery barn each morning and after school they would have it ready for us to drive home. In the fall of 1913, the folks purchased a house in Oberlin. Father died January 3, 1914, shortly after retiring to Oberlin."
His obituary in the Oberlin Herald dated 8 Jan 1914 reads: "The people of Oberlin were startled on Monday morning when informed that Mr. W.S. Bryan, who had moved to the city only last fall had died. He had been ailing for more than a year and altho he had sought the best of physicians they could do nothing for him. Wallace S. Bryan was born in Lenawee county, Michigan 61 years ago. Was married to Clara Bryan September 7, 1878. Came to Kansas in 1880 settling in Brown county. Afterwards moved to Jackson county, where he lived several years. They came to this county in 1908, buying a large tract of land in Finley township, where he lived until this fall when the family moved to Oberlin, that the children might have a better chance to go to school. The funeral was held at the home on Tuesday, sermon by Rev. J.P. Clark, after which he was buried in the Oberlin cemetery. Mr. Bryan was of a kind and loving disposition and had many friends wherever he lived. His family have lost a kind parent and the community a most excellent citizen."
Her death announcement in the 7 Nov 1940 Oberlin Herald reads:
"Just before going to press this morning it was learned that Mrs. Clara Bryan passed away at the hospital here a few hours earlier. A partial invalid for a long time and in advanced years, Mrs. Bryan had been cared for in the home by her daughter Hazel. Wednesday evening, last week, Mrs. Bryan fell while walking in the home. Removed to the hospital the next morning and x-ray disclosed a broken hip, which caused her much suffering, and led to her death this morning."Her obituary in the 14 Nov 1940 Oberlin Herald reads:
"Clara Jennie Bryan was born in Lenawell County, Michigan January 6, 1861 and departed this life at the Benton Memorial Hospital Oberlin, Kansas, Nov. 7, 1940, aged 79 years, 10 months and one day. She moved to Kansas with her parents when a young girl and was united with the Presbyterian church at the age of 13. She was married to Wallace Bryan September 4, 1878, at Kennekuk, Kansas. Mr. Bryan preceded her in death 28 years ago. She came to Decatur county in 1910 and has since resided here. She leaves to mourn her passing nine children, 35 grandchildren, and 22 great grandchildren, one brother, Fred Bryan of Horton, Kansas. The children are Mrs. Ella Sauvage, Emmett, Idaho; Mrs. Mahala Reed, Pablo, Montana; Newton Bryan, Rexford; Mrs. Lena Harris, McCook, Nebr.; Ben Bryan, Traer; Clarence Bryan, Mrs. Laura Pryor, Mrs. Alice Murlin and Hazel Bryan of Oberlin. "Grandma" Bryan as she was called was loved by all who knew her. No one was ever turned empty handed from her door. Her whole life was one grand preparation for her final journey."
