From "Obituaries in Tennessee Newspapers": McLemore, John C., born 1 January 1790 in Orange County, North Carolina died 20 Feb. 1846 In Memphis; one of the original founders of City of Memphis and founder of town of Fort Pickering. He purchased Andrew Jackson's part in the Rice grant on which Memphis now stands. "John C. McLemore came from North Carolina, was a clerk in the office of the Land Register and succeeded Robert Searcy as Register. He was the largest dealer in lands in the State of Tennessee. He was exceedingly popular throughout the Middle and West Tennessee. After an eventful career, he finally died in poverty in Memphis, only two or three years since." (Nashville Republican Banner, 2 July 1869, quoting an early article by Anson Nelson.) The heirs to John C. McLemore have filed suit, laying claim to land in most of Memphis. In 1840 McLemore deeded land to the LaGrange and Memphis Railroad for a rightaway and the company went insolvent; they claim that Broadway is not a legal highway. (Maury Democrat, 19 Dec 1889.)
