1-12mo-1836 - Ezekiel Hiatt granted a certificate to New Garden Mo, Mtg., Wayne Co., Indiana. (R45).In Guilford Co., NC., in 1801, Ezekiel Hiatt acquires 120 acres from his six brothers (see p. 63). He sells this a few months before he removed to Indiana: Deed Book 26, p. 273 - Ezekiah Hiatt to Stephen M. Chipman - 26 August 1836 - 120 acres - $875 - west side of south fork of Deep River - adjoining Cuthbert Hiatt and others. (R49).
On 1850 Census, Ezekiel Hiatt, aged 84, was living with the family of his son William, in Green township, Jay Co., Indiana. In Hinshaw's Vol. I, the records of New Garden Mo. Mtg., Guilford Co., NC., in the family of John and Mary Hiatt, Ezekiel is omitted, as well as his brothers John and Ameriah. (See pages 63 and 64.)
The family of Ezekiel Hiatt in 1800 Census of Guilford Co., NC., consisted of 1 male aged 26 to 45, and 1 female aged 16 to 26; in 1810, 1 male aged 26 to 45, 4 males under 10 years of age, and 1 female ages 16 to 26.
In 1941 John Talbert Hiatt wrote: "…The records I got from an old aunt that died 6 years ago at the age of 91 years, is that Ezekiel's sons were John, Talbert, William, and Frank (or Francis).…The following is a record I got from Edward W. Hiatt, Blue Mound, Kansas. He is a descendant of Ezekiel…(a grandson of Ezekiel's son John -editor)..Ezekiel Hiatt and family came from Near Guilford Courthouse, NC., to Wayne Co., Indiana in 1836 and later moved to Jay Co.,Indiana. Ezekiel had sons: John, Talbert, William, and Frank.." (R70).
In 1950 Raimon E. Hiatt wrote: "My grandfather Alexander Hiatt was born in NC. in 1830 and married Mary Coffin. My great-grandfather John Hiatt was born in NC. (don't know what part). in 1800. John had two brothers, Talbert and Ezekiel. Talbert was a Quaker.…"(R93).
In 1950 Robert E. Hiatt wrote: "John Hiatt, father of Alexander, and Jesse Hiatt his grandfather, were both farmers. John Hiatt freed his slaves after the war and moved to Indiana. "These data originated with the father of Robert E. Hiatt, Samuel Frank Hiatt, born in 1873. His great-great-grandfather Hiatt was Ezekiel, not Jesse, and his grandfather, John Hiatt, came to Indiana in the 1830's, as did Ezekiel. The wife of John Hiatt was Eleanor Shelley, and was probably a daughter or close relative of a Jesse Shelley, who was a neighbor of the Hiatts in North Carolina. This may account for the statement made by Samuel Frank Hiatt that his great-grandfather was named Jesse - this much is true, but Shelley, not Hiatt. (R94).

20 Aug. 1991 I met with Vern Hiatt today as he tuned our piano. He is living in Omaha, Neb. This is his families lines. He said that his father said that Ezekiel went to Western Neb. around Broken Bow, that would have been before 1900's. I paid him by giving him a copy of the HH Family History by William Perry Johnson. Did not get him to give me further info, he never got back to me. He was quite elderly at this time, 1992. Yes, you are correct Larry. I am from the John Jr. line, although I question how you bring up, or at least state, that the Coffin line is through the George Hiatt (2nd of John Sr's sons) line. That may be true, but as Ezekiel Marmaduke Hiatt had a brother named Shubel Coffin Hiatt (I've seen at least 3 spelling variations on his first name), I have to wonder how that name enters the John Jr. line 4 generations of removal from the George line - ?Anyway, Ezekiel Marmaduke Hiatt and Maria Meredith (Wilson) Hiatt's children:Albert Samuel (28 Sep 1867 - 14 Nov 1942)Marian Eleanor (19 Sep 1869 - 6 Sep 1966)Edward Warren (23 Feb 1873 - 4 Dec 1954)Ora Grace (25 Aug 1874 - 22 Feb 1965)Chester Arthur (1 Apr 1880 - 13 Jun 1945)I have a picture of all 5 of them - just not readily available. They were all in early/middle adulthood when the pic was taken. The first 4 were born in Penn Township, Jay Co, IN, except for Chester who was born near Critzer, Linn Co, KS. Ezekiel and Maria moved from the former to the latter in 1878, I believe out of the interest of the health of one of the daughters (IIRC). Albert Samuel was my great grandfather. I was born almost 8 years after the death of the latest-living one (Marian Eleanor), so I never got to meet any of them. My maternal grandmother, Dorothy Bell Hiatt, was the eldest child (of 4) of Albert Samuel. She and her 3 siblings (Albert Marion, Fern Blanche, Arthur Shelley - all 4 of them born shortly before or during WWI, and all 4 of whom I got to meet when I was a child) were all born in/around Linn Co, KS. This is where the Hiatt name stops on my family's side because my father's last name is Noel, of course.Since there is a Quaker interest here (which I gladly support), I can say that I really haven't yet gotten in touch with enough of the other descendants of Ezekiel and Maria to determine if that's survived on ANY line. There is circumstantial evidence pointing to Albert Samuel Hiatt and his wife Blanche Izella Bell both being Quakers (if not officially members of a MM, at least by association and practice), which with much flexibility could possibly make my maternal grandmother the last in a long line of birthright Quakers. I'd like to believe that, anyway. I know that in the paternal line between Ezekiel Marmaduke and John Sr (original immigrant), there was one who married out of meeting, but he ended up divorcing that wife who was not a Quaker, and then 2 or 3 generations later, you have Ezekiel Marmaduke marrying Maria Meredith Wilson (birthright Quaker from a really strong Quaker tradition) and in the geneaology project my maternal grandmother did in the early 70s (she was also a trained librarian), in the reminescences of Marian Eleanor Hiatt's daughter, her maternal grandparents both practiced the "plain speak" around other birthright Quakers as both were raised in the Quaker tradition, so apparently the Quaker practice followed on much longer, despite the marrying-out. I don't know about "restoration" of Quaker status, if that works, or how. It seems to me that there were probably quite a few people who were supported and enjoyed informal assocation, but who for reasons of perhaps official organizational integrity could not be recognized as members of a MM.Anyway, well, other than going through tons of pages of my grandmother's work (which covered every descendant of Ezekiel and Maria's born by around 1970) and making a huge family tree (some day I shall do this), this is what I can give you right off the bat very easily.BTW - I have never come into anything mentioning Ezekiel going to Western Nebraska. I'd love for you to share whatever material you have with me.
