An old family Bible (1816). has this reference with this respect to James Shirley, "James, son of James, son of James, son of Walter Shirley" who landed in America about 1726. James and Mary Shirley lived at Shirlyn, a gift from James Shirley's father, a plantation some three miles east of Smithfield on the Middleway - Charles Town turnpike. This property is now owned by Mr. George T. Shirley, son of Robert Vinson Shirley. James Shirley is said to be nursed a neighbor in his illness and to have caught the patient's contagion. He was buried in the family burying ground, now on ht eland of Mr. Joseph Amon Grantham, near Middleway, W. Va. (R37).

George St. and Sarah Locke are buried on teh old Locke Farm, one mile east of Wadesville, Virginia. George provided wheat and grain for the army of the Revolutionary War.

Sarah was the 3rd daughter of John Hiatt Jr. and his second wife, Margaret Stevens Edwards Hiatt. John Hiatt Jr. settled in Virginia in the early 1730's, in an area norht of Winchester, near the Opeckan Creek. he is referred to in Henshaws American Quaker Encyclopedia, as one of hte fathers of the Colony. His father, John Hiatt, Sr. was born in England in 167f, married mary SMITH in 1695, daughter of William and Grace Smith. John Hiatt Sr. setteld in Bucks Co., PA in 1699. He died there in 1726.

John Locke, was drafted for service in the Revolutionary war on Feb. 23, 1778, in Capt. Jonathan Clarks co., 4th Virginia Regimnet of Foot, commanded by Col., Abraham Bowman; was transrerred in June 1778 to Capt. Kirkpatircks Co., 4th and 8th Virginia Regiment of Foot, commanded by Col. James Wood and Col., John Neville successively; was transferred to Lt. Col. Robert Ballards co., in Oct 1778, commanded by Col John Neville; he re-enlisted for duration of war in Dec 1778; was transferred to Capt. John Steeds Co., 4th 8th and 12th Virginia Regiemnts in May 1779. His name last appears on the company roster Dec. 9, 1779. He served as a private and a Corporal. During his service he was at Valley Forge, PA; Middlebrook, N.J.; Middletown, N.Y.' Morristown, N.J.; White Plains, N.Y.

Deed Book 16, pg 538 - Dated August 2, 1774. Assignment of Lease. William Kelly of Frederick Co., VA to John Lock of Berkeley Co., - 122 acres leased by Fairfax to Kelly December 17, 1772.
No Witnesses. Recorded August 2, 1774, Deed Book 19, pg 229 - Dated May 21, 1781. Deed of Release. James Abernathy and wife, Anne of Frederick Co. to John Lock of same place tract of 257 acres, part of a larger tract of 564 acres granted to Peter Luke by Fairfax Oct 22, 1768 on drains of Opequon - Line of Cuthbert Bullitt.
Wittnesses: Joseph Day, Meredith Helm and Thomas Campbell Recorded AUg 7, 1781.
Much of the above mentioned 257 acres remained in the family into succeeding generations.It is not known for sure certain if John was born in Virginia. It is the opinon of this writer, at this time, that htere were strong family ties with the LARUE family of Hampshire Co., VA. Only one child has been proven for John and Nancy and that was George Locke Sr., who married Sarah Hiatt.
