James Samuel HIATT

Goodspeed's History - Franklin Co., p. 759:  Dr. James S. Hiatt,druggist and general practitioner, of New Haven, was born in Kentucky,in the year 1830, son of John and Tabitha (Campbell) Hiatt.  Thefather was born in Virginia, in 1806, and was the French descent, thename formerly being spelled Hieatt.  He was married in 1829,  and in1836 removed to Franklin Co., Mo. Located ten miles west of union,where he spent the remainder of his days, dying in 1875. He was alifelong farmer.  The mother was born in Kentucky in about 1800 anddied in 1866.  both parents were members of the Baptist Church.  JamesS., remained at home until sixteen years of age, and received a faireducation. He then entered as a clerk in a dry goods store andcontinued in that capacity for two years, at which time he entered asa partner in a general store, and continued here two years.  In 1852he began the study of medicine under Dr. E. D. Hammack, and in 1854entered the Eclectic Medical Institute of Cincinnaati, Ohio, took onecourse and then began his practice at New Haven, where he remaineduntil 1862, at which time he entered the St. Louis Medical College,and in 1864 took part of another course at the same but was taken sickand compelled to abandon his studies. He has since made his home atNew Haven, with the exception of about five years when he engaged infarming habing been obliged to abandon his practice on account ofillness.  At the end of that time he returned to town and againresumed his practice, which he continued until about 1882, since whichtime he ha been engaged in the drug business in connection with asmall practice.  In 1856 Dr. Hiatt married Miss Lucinda E. Fisher, anative of St. Louis County, Mo. and the daughter of B. and N. Fisher.To this union were born three children, two now living, Dr. Elijah L.a dental surgeon and John B.  The Doctor is a Democrat in politics, amember of the Farmers and Mechanics Aid Addociation and he and wifeare members of the Christian church.
