Larry,
I have a clue as to what happened between Darius McKee Hiatt and his wife, Margaret "Peggy" Adams Hyatt.  I have a whole lot of information that arrived in the mail today from 2 fellow Hiatt relations through Darius McKee Hiatt and Margaret "Peggy" Adams Hiatt.  They are descendants of 2 different sisters to Clayton HIATT, the father of my great Uncle Raymond's dad, James Daniel Henry Hiatt.  (Who was the eldest son of Clayton Reimer (sp*) Hiatt of Gasconade Co., MO)

Someone recently sent me this information thought you might be interested in it.  I have more on this branch as Darius was my paternal ggggranddad through my paternal grandmother, who was one of Darius' gggranddaughters.  If you are interested in this seeing what else I can offer you on this branch, please let me know.

From the newspaper "Missouri Republican" dated 13 July 1866:
"MURDER AND SUICIDE IN FRANKLIN COUNTY"
Correspondence of the Republican
NEW HAVEN, MO  July 11, 1866

"Yesterday, Mr. Darius Hiatt, living in Boeuf, in this county, took a long knife and cut his wife's throat, threw his greenbacks into the fire (six thousand dollars) and burned them, and with the same knife severed the arteries of each of his wrists and laid himself on his bed to die.  No one was present, except a grand-child of his, only four to five years old, who gave the alarm to some of the neighbors.  A physician was soon procured but whether he will be able to save the miserable man or not, is not known by your correspondant.  Hiatt and his wife had lived together for nearly half a century in this county, and no one knew but that htey had lived agreeably.  He was originally a farmer, but had been merchandising for eight or ten years, until the raid in 1864 closed out his business.  He has been dyspeptic for that the last few years and considered a monomaniac on that subject by all who knew him.  He was nearly three score and ten and his wife (an amicable woman) was about the same age.  He had two brothers, highly respected men, living inthe county and is a cousin to Judge Hiatt, of St. Louis County."

So the murder happened on July 12, 1866 according to this report.  The raid that is spoken of is of General Sterling Price's raid into Missouri, he burned and pillaged as he made his way through the stae of Missouri during the Civil War.  I wonder if possibly the grandchild mentioned was Great Grandpa james Daniel Henry Hiatt? He would have been the correct age and his mother, Susan, died within 3 months of when this occured.

On July 27, 1866. another report on this event was reportd again in teh Missouri Republican.

"The Last Chapter of the HIATT Tragedy"
Correspondence of the Republican

Some two weeks ago I gave you an accountof Dennis Hiatt's murdering his wife and burning $6000 in greenbacks, and severing the arteries of his own wrists.  I will give you another short chapter that will cause the cheek of every Christian to tingle with shame when he reads it.  This wretched maniac Hiatt (for Dr. Butler, one of the first physicians pronounced him one six months ago), was left to welter in his own blood, with an additional deep cut he gave himself on the throat the same evening, until the crimson blood ceased to run, and died in clots and pools, life still remaining.  A guard was placed over him for seven or eight days, the neighbors all the time threatening to mob him.  The Sherriff of Gasconade County, came with a wagon and carried him to Hermann jail, experiencing some difficulty in keeping the mob from hanging him; the putrid blood still in dry clots on his clothes and his would full of "creepers".  (maggots or other related insects"-Bev")  This in a Christian county, and under the aberration of scores of men professing to be Christians, and men who knew HIATT had been insane for months.  The wretched man, the first night he lay in jail, succeeded in destroying his life by tearing open his wounds with his fingers. So ends this shameful affair.  Praise is due the Gasconde Co. Sherriff."

12/31/1914  (Obituary of Great Grandpa James Daniel Henry Hiatt's Stepmother.)
"Mrs. Elizabeth Hiatt, wife of C. R. Hiatt of Mapelwood, died Dec. 20 at her home and was buried at St. Clair Dec. 23.  Deceased was the mother of Henry Hiatt of Union and leaves besides her husband and the following children:  James, Edward, George, Henry, Charles and Cecil Hiatt, Mrs. Ethel Notter and Mrs. Anna Maurer."

From Brush Creek Township's newspaper.

"1-16-1914  Mr. Henry Hiatt and family moved to Union last week.  People who had taken an active part in religious and educational affairs are missed when they leave a community.  We wish them success in their new home."

From a newspaper called "Headlight" comes more news of Great granddad's half brother and family.
"Mr. and Mrs. Henry Hiatt spent the first of the week in St. Louis in consultation with an oculist relative to the eyes of their daughter.  Teh little girl has been having some trouble with her eyes for some time and we hope she will be better soon."  (the daughter's name was Velma.)

From the newspaper, "Hermann Voksblatt" in Hermann, MO. dated 8/18/1866

                             ADMINISTRATORS NOTICE

ARMSTRONG, Admr. of D.M. HIATT, dec'd"

One of the descendants of Clayton's sisters states this in these papers:  "Our family descendant researcher says that Darius was a bootlegger and that he and Margaret had a row over money owed him."  I cannot verify this at all, but am trying to get in touch with this particular person to see what else she might know."
