Parris preached for many years at Gunn's Chapel Methodist Episcopal Church in Garrard Co. KY. and was known as the greatest storyteller of that region. He was suspended for a time in 1836 for using spirits to excess, threatening to whip David Reynolds with a cowhide whip, imprudent intimacy with a female, and starting his boat on the Sabbath. He was Described as a giant in strength and stature.
