From a posting by Dr. Wilmer Kerns, he adds to his report:
This family graveyard contains the remains of some of hte pioneer settles to Hampshire Co. (Jonathan HIETT graveyard, high on a hill on the west side of the river.) Here are buried Bethel and Rebecca Tansy Pugh (1740-1822), for example. The cast iron fence which surroudns the graveyard was removed from teh gounds of the courthouse in Romney, after the Hampshire County Courthouse was destroyed druign the 1920's. (Note: The courthouse building was not burned during the Civil War, contrary to public opinion.) Although the graveyard is located in an isolated section of Hampshire county, it is still in relatively good condition. Unlike the Evan HIETT graveyard on Sandy Ridge, this graveyard has not been ravaged or marauded by domestic animals.

This graveyard was called the "the Jerry Hiett Cemetery" in Maud Pugh's book on Capon Valley pioneers, but no tombstone data was published. Located on a high ridge on the west side of North River between Pleasant Dale and North River Mills, this well-planned cemetery cannot be located without the help of a local guide. Access as via a steep mountain path. On my first visit to this site, my guide became exhausted while climbing the steep terrain from the graveyard back to my automobile. Not willing to live the scene to seek assistance, I pushed the elderly guide up the moutain path (an abandoned 19th century wagon roadbed) to safety. We later joked about the experience.
A metal fence surrounds the graveyard. My guide stated that the fence came from the courthouse grounds in Romney, when the courthouse was rebuilt during the 1920s. All visible tombstones inscriptions are included below:
Hiett, Jonathan, son of Evan and Sarah (Smith) Hiett, was born on Feb. 13, 1781, and died on Dec. 5, 1861, aged 80 years, 9 months, 22 days. His wife, Hannah Harrison, was born in 1789 and died on Oct. 14, 1866.
Hiett, Jane, daughter of Jonathan and Hannah (Harrison) Hiett, born Dec. 10, 1813 and died on Nov. 5, 1853. She married Wesley Park and, according to Maud Pugh, in Capon Valley..., Park died out west and Jane returned to Hampshire County, where she died and was buried in the Jonathan Hiett graveyard on North River, Hampshire County, Va.
Hiett, Jonathan, Jr., was born on Sept. 10, 1822 and died on March 7, 1907, of "old age," according to courthouse death record. He was born in Hampshire county. Dr. E. B. Martin reported his death to the Hampshire County Clerk. (Note: These dates should be checked against other sources.) Maud Pugh, in her Capon Valley..., stated that his parents were Jonathan and Hannah (Harrison) Hiett, and that Jonathan, Jr. died on March 7, 1902. Jonathan's tombstone appears to give 1907 as the death year. His wife, Mary M. Arnold of Burli8ngton, W.Va., was born on Dec. 2, 1837 and died in 1921.
Hiett, Sarah, daughter of Jonathan and Hannah (Harrison) Hiett, died on March 4, 1900, aged 83 years and 17 days, "Gone but not forgotten."
Hiett, Margaret, daughter of Jonathan and Hannah (Harrison) Hiett, died on July 27, 1887, aged 74 years, 4 months, 14 days,
Hiett, infant, was born and died on Aug, 1, 1831.
Hiett, Jeremiah, son of Jonathan and Hannah (Harrison) Hiett, was born on Nov. 8, 1829 and died on Oct. 9, 1893. His wife, Emily S. Burkett, was born on Sept. 18, 1830 and died on Feb. 21, 1896. The graveyard where they were buried was called "the Jerry Hiettg graveyard," by Maud Pugh, local historian.
Hiett, Evan, son of Jonathan and Hannah (Harrison) Hiett, was born on March 5, 1808 and died May 9, 1887. His wife, Barbara Wise, was born on Aug. 15, 1806 and died July 6, 1858. These inscriptions were carved onto the same monument: Hannah J. Wise Hiett was born on March 15, 1845 and died on Dec. 5, 1861; Elizabeth Hiett was born on May 28, 1838 and died on Sept. 16, 1840.Hiett, Jonathan, son of Evan and Sarah (Smith) Hiett, was born on Feb. 13, 1781, and died on Dec. 5, 1861, aged 80 years, 9 months, 22 days. About 1798 Thomas Gawthrop and family removed near to Pruntytown, in Harrison, now Taylor, Co., W. Va. Elizabeth's killing of a panther, an oft-repeated story of frontier days, occurred in 1799.
The stone house that Thomas Gawthrop built on the Northwestern Turnpike stood until a few years ago. Patience (Allen). Gawthrop, mother of Thomas Gawthrop, was a first cousin to the famous Quaker, John Woolman. (See p. 37). The following verse was written by Patience on 10 December 1796, for her daughter, Hannah, when she was six (eight?). years old and first started to school. The first letter of each line spells her name:H ave care, my child, while thou art in thy youth,
A nd learn thy book and mind to speak the truth.
N o evil do, nor idle custom learn,
N o school tales tell; to schoolmate do no harm.;
