Reinierse, bp. Jan 19 1695, in NY; and (sup) Reinier. Signed his name 'Reinier
Van Sichlen'" pg 362 Regis in Alpha Order of the Early Settlers of Kings Co
LI NY by Bergan first pub 1881.This, first in a string of Reinier, Rynear, Reiner (per my grandmother, Aletta
Cooper), was undoubtedly named in recognition of the family name of his grand-
mother, Grietje REINIERS Jansen who had the public tangle with Anneke Bogardus. The records of the Reformed Dutch Church in New Amsterdam and New York, from
11 December 1639 to 26 August 1801, edited by Samuel S. Purple, New York, 1890
has the following entry for the year 1687:den 26 Mart. Revnier Van Sickelen, j.m. Van N. getrouwt tot
mit en Licentie. Amersfoort, en Janneken Van Hoo Breuckelen
ren, Wed
d' Eerste wonende alhier en twede
tot N. Amersfoort. This list of marriages is headed by a hard headed quote from
St. Paul: Heb. xiii. v. 41. I suspect the old Dutch liked its judgmental tone:
"HET HOUWELYCK IS EERLYCK ONDER ALLEN, EN HET BEDDE ONBEVLECKY; MAER D'HOEREER-
DERS EN OVERSPEELDERS SAL GODT STRAFFEN EN OORDEELEN.""Marriage is honorable in all, and the bed undefiled; but whoremongers and
adulterers God will judge."Jannetje (or, as in the marriage record, "Janneken" -until the 19th century
people spelled names and other words however they heard them) was the widow of
Joseph Hegeman at the time of her marriage to Reinier Van Sickelin. She was then
barely 23 years of age. There is no record that she brought any Hegeman children
so her family were all Van Sickelins.Reinier took the oath of allegiance as a native of Gravesend, Long Island in
1687. Whether he was then resident of Gravesend or neighboring Flatlands is not
clear. The entry reads "Renier Van Siegelen, of Gravensend, native." Native, in
this case, means born in the colony - to be distinguished from so much of the
populace then being immigrants from Europe.
Four years earlier, 1683, a list of heads of household in Gravesend made for
purposes of taxation notably does not include any Van Sickelens. His name does appear in the records of the Flatbush Dutch Church as a witness
to the baptism of one Andries Rees on March 12, 1682; written there as "Rynier
Siklen"."Rymer Van Sigelen" is head of household on a census taken "about 1698" in the
town of Gravesend, Kings County. This record shows 1 man, 1 woman, 4 children,
1 apprentice and one slave. (Taken from "The Documentary History of the State of
New York", Vol. III, Albany, Weed Parson & Co., 1850). One is driven to the con-
clusion that he was under his father's roof in Flatlands until his marriage - at
which time he must have procured a residence in Gravesend where he lived until
his relatively early death: his will, dated Nov. 18, 1703, was proved in Kings
Kings County April 17,1704 - the 43rd year of his life.
