April 8, 2000 received letter that clarifies some information for this line.  She write in part, "I don't own a computer because I had most of my Van Meter genealogy done before computers came so popular.  I have 21 books in print adn theya re hard bound with 7 books in 3 volumes.  I have 2 sets of those plus the Van Meter index.  ---- I'm related to the HIATT family through my great grandmother, Julia Ann HIATT.  She married 2 Van Meter brothers.
Benjamin (Son of Eramus Van Meter and Mary Burroughs) was born 1805 in state of NJ, and married on 11-26-1828.  Hannah McQueen who was born 1-15-1806 in the state of NJ adn died 8-21-1865 at the age of 59.  This couple settled in Van Buren Township, Pulaski Co., the state of Indiana. They bought land from the government. They had 7 children.
Child 3) Eramus (Called Ross) b. 10-20-1832 in Salem City, NJ, died 11-16-1862 in Civil War of typhoid fever at Bowling Green, KY. He married Julia A. HIATT 12-21-1853.  Cramus enrolled in teh Civil War August 9-1862 as a corporal in Co. E, of the 87th IN Volunteers.  He died in service of typhoid fever at Bowling Green, KY 11-16-1862. He is buried in the National Cemetery at Nashville, TN in grave #10491.
Child 4)  John McQueen b. 5-2-1836 in Cumberland County, N.J., died 1-26-1873 and is buried at Mull Cemetery, Pulaski Co., Star City, IN.  he married 9-26-1866 Julia A. HIATT VAN METER (widow of older brother, called Ross) who was born on 2-24-1833, d. 9-19-1910 and is buried at Grass Creek Cemeter, Fulton Co., Wayne twnshp, IN beside her son, Martin Luther Van Meter, who is my grandfather.

In those days if the older son died and there was a younger son in the family he married his brother's widow as was the above case, making the Van Meter's related to the Hiatt's.  (Notes continue under Absalom HIATT, etc.)
