SERGEANT O'NEILL'S DEATH, Commander of Algiers police Succumbs to Operations
The draped Courthouse in Algiers mutely proclaims that the earthly career of
Sargeant William O'Neill has ended. He passed away at 8:10 o'clock yesterday
morning in the Charity Hospital, where he had been operated upon several times
since March 8. The residents of the Fifth District and the police detailed
there feel his death as a personal loss.
With all the honors the Police Department can accord, the body will be buried
at 2:30 o'clock this afternoon from the family residence 923 Opelousas Avenue.
Because of the fact that Holy Thursday is being observed, there will be only a
short service at the Church of the Holy Name of Mary. The interment will be in
St. Joseph's Cemetery.
It is the first time since the Courthouse was erected that a commanding
officer is mourned. Sergeant O'Neill was much beloved, and his home was filled
last night with sorrowing friends who offered their condolence to the
grief-stricken family. Mayor Behrman and Inspector O'Conner will attend the
funeral. The police detail, under the command of Captain Capo, will consist of
a sergeant, two patrolmen and twenty-four footmen. As a mark of respect to the
dead officer, two patrolmen were detailed since the body reached the O'Neill
home.

Sergeant O'Neill succeeded his father in the drayage business, being
in partnership with Arthur McLaughlin, and at the dissolution of the firm
Sergeant O'Neill withdrew from the business. his first wife was Miss Theresa
