From "Ritchey notes": John Ritchie came to the US from Scotland via Ireland by
boat on the Brigatine "Free Mason" in the year 1773. He landed in Barnwell
District, S.C. He served in the American Revolution war of 1783. After the war
John married Marguerete Tyler daughter of Abe Tyler. The Ritchies along with
the Tylers came to Mississippi and settled near Topisaw Creek in Lawrence

to get both his dwelling and kitchen burned one night recently. The contents
of kitchen and all of the dwelling except bedding, organ, one trunk, and their
clothing were lost. The fire was discovered about 11 o'clock at night, and was

Jacob was more than likely named for his mother's (Susan Moak) uncle, Jacob
Hickman who raised Susan after her mother died.

Sally had eleven children, some twins, and died at 32yrs. She is buried in
home cemetary, 300 yards east of home, near Ritchey Creek, 10 miles SE of
Brookhaven. The information, other than first name of Sally, came from the
family history written by M. E. Ritchie. The first name came from Ritchie
family bible information as published by MS GEN SOC. Cemtry & Bible Records,
volume 18, page 136.There is a high probably that her parents were Thomas Coon, circa 1813, and
Mary, circa 1815; brother Jacob, circa 1851. These three people lived in the
household of Jacob Ritchie in 1870 census, Lincoln County.Death date of March 26, 1885 came from Dr. Bowman's journal.

Born in Charleston S.C. to James Madison Johnson and Elizabeth Tompkins. She
was first married to Walter Sartin of Wesson, MS, and secondly to Jacob
Ritchie. She was a member of Fair River Baptist Church. Dr. S. H. Jones of
lst Baptist presided at her funeral assisted by Dr. J. A. Taylor and Rev. Gill
of McComb who led prayer at graveside. She had died at her daughter's (Rose
Etta Ritchey Moak) home on North Church Street in Brookhaven. She died at the
age of 88.She was survived by stepchildren: Wright Ritchie of New Orleans

Mississippi Cavalry, for a three year period. He was last paid on October 31, 1862 by McClure. He deserted on December 21, 1862 (with his brother
Emanuel ... Jacob had already deserted in November). They all three returned on December 31, 1862 and served til April 30, 1863. This info from Mississippi Archives Confederate records, roll # 73.On August 1, 1870, Elder J. M. Ritchy and Nancy Ritchy were joined the
Pleasant Hill Baptist Church. They were dismissed by letter on November 8,
1879.J. M. Ritchey contributed $ .25 for purchase of Ever Green Hymn Books at
Pleasant Hill Church. On June 8, 1879 the church paid for the books from
Rogers Publishing of Memphis TN. (The average contribution was 25 to 50

House 635, Family 626: Samuel G. Wilkinson, 44, male, born in MS.
Judy Wilkinson, 36, female, forn in MS.Children: Madison, 13 male; Mary, 10 female; John, 7 male; Elisabeth, 4
female,(NOTE: In 1870 census, there is an: S. E. Wilkinson, female, age 14,
living with Nancy and Meredith Ritchie...could this be the same?), and Martha,
1 female.Next door, house 626, family 627 is Nathan Wilkinson, 22 male; and 16 year old
female, possibly "Frances", but writing is fairly illegible.Family 632 is D. M. Tyler; 633 is J. M. Ritchie; 634 is J. B. Ritchie.

Information is taken from 1880 Lincoln Cty Census records listing Roberson as
an infant son of Nancy and JM Ritchie. No further mention is made of Roberson
in any other censuses on household of Meredith. There is a possibility that
this is R. R. Ritchie who married Sally Lott. The Death Date is not a
certainty by any means!

parents John B. & Susan Ritchie.In 1880 Census, Emanuel is listed as a 39 year old, head of household, with a
wife, Gabrella, age 24, and two sons: John W. aged 3, and Jacob O. aged 1.Marriage date: Jan 27, 1876 per Lawrence County Marriages 1818-1879, GEN
976.2536BOn July 27, 186_, Emanuel enlisted (with Jacob and Meredith) in the Confederate
Army, Company C, Garland`s Battalian, in Summit, MS, for a period of three
years. On December 21, 1862 he deserted, along with Meredith, and they
returned to camp on December 31, 1862. (Brother Jacob had deserted in November
1862). They all three served until April 30, 1863. He was last paid on
October 31, 1862. Info is from Mississippi Archives Confederate Soldiers
records, microfilm # 73.
Margaret Ann Gaberella RUTLAND
Gaberilla died at the home of her daughter, Ola Fuller, in Wesson, MS. She was
a member of Topisaw Baptist Church and is buried there beside her husband,
Emanuel Ritchie, and her son Jacob Ritchie. There is a fairly new tombstone
marking her and Emanuel's grave. At the time of her death, she was 74 years
old and was survived by 8 children, 41 grandchildren, and 6 great-grand
children.
Obit states she was survived by brother, Bill Rutland and sister, Mrs. John
Smith. Preceded in death by Emanuel five years earlier. Funeral services werec
conducted by Rev J. J. Terry, Topisaw Baptist Church with burial in church
cemetary.
Obtained birth year of 1877 from his listing as age 3 on 1880 census.
In July 1926 he lived in Tickfaw, LA according to his mother's obit.
Birth year based on 1880 census where he was listed as aged 1 year.
Possibly died at age of 32, pending verification. Records of Dr. W. L. Bowman
show a "Jacob Ritchey Jr. died April 5, 1912". This Jacob is not a junior, but
rather the son of Emanuel Ritchie, and nephew of Jacob Ritchey #530.
Tombstone verifies relationship to Emanuel and Gabrilla Ritchie, as well as
his death date. Family lore states he died of typhoid fever. He was never
married.
Died at age of 75 per family history by M E Ritchie.
Neiderland TX is near Port Arthur.
In July 1926 he lived in Mobile Al per his mother's obit.
Dr. Bowman's journal shows a baby girl born to M. A. Gabrilla Ritchie (Emanuel's
wife) on October 21, 1896. Family lore tells of "Little Lucy" being burned to
death at the age of three or four, and that she was buried beside Emanuel's arm
which was buried in the old Ritchie cemetary. There is no mention of this child
in any census that I have found, so this is probably the child.
