“Leander E. Hiatt, who is a member of the country board of supervisors and a representative citizen, conducting a successful business as a dealer in live stock, was born in Henry County, Indiana, in 1850, in 1850. His father, Joshua Hiatt, was a native of Ohio and a miller by trade. He removed to Missouri in 1872 and remained there until his death, which occurred in 1905. In his business affairs he prospered, becoming well-to-do and throughout his entire life he enjoyed the respect and esteem of those with whom he was associated, for his life was in harmony with his professions as a member of the Society of Friends. His political endorsement was given to the republican party. Prior to her marriage Mrs. Joshua Hiatt bore the name of Mary Cooper. She, too, was a native of Indiana and her husband lived in harmony with the teachings of that peaceful seat that inculcates the kindly graces of character and the Christian principles of forbearance and brotherly kindness.
“Leander E. Hiatt, who was one a family of four children, pursued his education in the public schools and afterward learned the miller’s trade, which he followed until his removal to Missouri. For two years he resided in that state and in 1874 arrived in Indianola. For thirty-four years he has now made his home in Warren county and has therefore largely witnessed its growth and development. After his arrival here he worked by the month as a farmhand but ambitions to engage in business on his own account, he later secured a farm, which he began to cultivate and improve. In 1882 he removed to Indianola, where he began dealing in live stock and is still engaged in this business. He has, however, sold his land. He is well known as a leading dealer in live stock and is conducting a successful business.Mr. Hiatt was married to Miss Addie Dixon, of Brooklyn, New York, and they have six children: Elmer, Harry, Charles, Sallie, Mary and Wilson. Both are widely known and their good qualities have gained for them many friends. Mr. Hiatt is a stalwart republican in politics, keeps well informed on the issues and questions of the day and has done effective work in behalf of the public welfare in the various offices to which he has been called by his fellow citizens. He served as a member of the school board, has been a member of the city council and in 1904 was elected a member of the board of supervisors, since which time he has served in the office, acting as chairman of the board in 1907. He is also a member of the Fair Association and is in hearty sympathy with every movement that tends to promote the welfare and substantial upbuilding of the city and country.” (History of Warren Co., Iowa, by Rev. L.E. Hiatt Dies Suddenly
L.E. Hiatt, long time resident and stock buyer of this city, died suddenly at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Worth Thompson, Des Moines, Monday evening.Death was due to an attack of heart disease.
Mr. Hiatt returned Sunday from a visit at the home of his son, Wilson Hiatt, at South Bend, Ind. He seemed to be in his usual health but complained of feeling tired. The fatal attack came suddenly Monday evening.
Mr. Hiatt came to Indianaola in 1874 from Indiana. He farmed several years and forty-five years ago, began buying and shipping live stock, continuning until a year ago. He built up a large business and was one fo the heaviest and oldest buyers for the Glorrell Packing Co., of Ottumwa.
He is survived by three sons, Elmer, of Wenatchee, Wash: Harry of Colo. Springs, Colo. Wilson of South Bend, Ind. and two daughters, Mr.s E. A. Austin of Summerville, Oregon, and Mrs. Worth Thompson of Des Moines, a brother, L.W. Hiatt and a sister, Mrs. Mary Calvert of Dewitt Mo.
Mr. Hiatt took an active interest in politics and civic affairs having served as a member of the board of suppervisors, Indianola school board and city council.
Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at the Overton Funeral home.
Mr. Hiatt has been in the stock shipping business in Indianola for forty - three years. He begqan with William long in 1883. The Long to whom he disposes of his business in not, however, related to the Long with whom he began business. L.E. Hiatt came to Warren County from Indiana in 1874 to work for E.W. Hartman by the month. In 1875 he was married and , after looking around for a better location came back and settled here in 1876. Since 1883 he has been continuously buying stock with the exception of one year spent in Calif.
