undergo the strenuous experience of being made into United States army
officers, 140 men of New Orleans, the first detail from this city to go to the
training camp - left here over the Texas and Pacific railway, Wednesday
afternoon.' The article then listed the names of the 140 officer candidates,
which included JOHN PRESTON LONGMIRE, who was at that time an unmarried 27 year
old. From the New Orleans Times picayune dated August 12, 1917. '... A public
reception and dance in honor of the graduate officers returning from Fort
Roots, Arkansas will be held near Lafayette Park. Every resident of New Orleans
is requested to present himself or herself at the Illinois Cenrtal depot
Thursday evening at 7:30, at which time a special train from Little Rock will
bring the returning officers home...' Capt. John P. Longmire was one of those
new officers to be honored. He was then assigned captain of Company D, 128th
regiment, Camp MacArthur, Waco Texas, the company being composed of National
Guard members from Wisconsin. It was in Waco on September 29, 1917 that he
married Germaine Rocquet. Not long afterward he left for Europe where he served
as an infantry captain in France in the 39th Division, American Expeditionary
Force under General Pershing. It was while serving in France that he received
both joyous and then sad news: the birth of his first daughter, Adele Catherine
on June 27, 1918 and the death of his mother, Emma Catherine on September 7,
1918.'"
