Notes

George V King of England

King George V of England; Christened: George Frederick Ernest Albert; Known as
"Georgie" to the family.  Debrett's Book of Royal Children list the date of
death as 27 Jan.  He was a very strict father.  He passed away a 5 min. before
midnight on 20 Jan.  At age 16, George V employed a Japanese practitioner to
tattoo a large blue and red dragon on his right arm. He was known as the Sailor
Prince; he entered the Royal Navy in 1877 and after an active naval career and
successive promotions, rose to the rank of vice admiral in 1903. The
outstanding event of the reign of George V was World War I.  Following
England's declaration of war on Germany, the king renounced all the German
titles belonging to him and his family and changed the name of the royal house
to Windsor. (from Saxe-Coburg-Gotha).

Mary of Teck (May) Queen

Christened: Victoria Mary Augusta Louis Olga Pauline Claudine Agnes; Known as:
Princess May;  After 1910, Queen Mary (The ocean line,  The Queen Mary was
named after her).  Queen Mary was a shy woman, whose only broadcast contact
with the people of Britain or her Empire consisted of the twenty-eight words
with which she christened the massive Cunard line that bore her name. But she
set a social example even more formidable than that of her husband,  and she
molded her own family,  including her grandchildren,  in a most definite
fashion. Known as: Mary (1867-1953); Princess May of Teck (1867-1893); Duchess
of York (1893-1901); Princess of Wales (1901-1910); Queen Mary (1910-1936);
Queen Mother (1936-1953)

John Charles Francis Prince

Prince John developed epliepsy when he was young.  His condition deteriorated,
and by a decision made when he had reached the age of 11,  he was removed from
home and taken to Wood Farm,  Wolferton, near Sandringham, to be looked after
exclusively by Mrs. Bill and a man servant.  John died in his 14th year.

Horace Arthur THOMPSON Sr.

EXCERPTS FROM A LETTER FROM MY UNCLE, HORACE A. THOMPSON, TO COLONEL EDWARD
KUMPE IN TALLAHASSEE, FLORIDA DATED MAY 21, 1964 [ROBERT O'NEILL RIN 4]:
"So I was informed, I was a "Blue Baby" at birth, and they had to spank me to
start my breathing. The Family Doctor told my Mother that my heart was weak and
missed a beat and that I would probably not live to age seven and the least
emotional excitement would kill me sooner. When I was still alive at age seven,
the Doctor changed my time to fourteen. Before age fourteen I learned all
about it and decided that as I only had a short time to live, I would enjoy it
by creating my own excitement. I became The Worst Kid In The Neighborhood. I
picked fights with all the other boys my age or older, despite the fact that
every time my Mother undertook to correct me, my Grandmother would say "Stop!
Remember that the least excitement will kill him.
Along about 1938, whenever I went to sleep flat on my back, my breathing
stopped, awakening me and causing me to jump out of bed, rush over to Mrs
Thompson's bed, so that she could slap me on the back until I could start
breathing again. Once, I asked her to sit alongside my bed, holding her hand on
my chest while I went to sleep on my back and, as I suspected, she found that
my heart actually stopped as well as my breathing.
Finally, I trained myself not to turn over on my back while asleep."
Doc T-53-3 lists him first as the #4 man in Company C of La. Field Art. and
second as sargent and gunner of Battery A. La Field Art. It also mentions he
won the competitive drill and an engraved cup.

Note: This is an excerpt from one of the numerous letters that Horace A.
Thompson wrote to his many friends which had worked with him at the U.S.
Engineers. It is to be noted that Horace smoked nine packs of cigarettes a day
and lived till the age of 81, as related to me today, Thursday 10 November
1988, by his son Horace Jr. who is almost 71 (in January) owns and operates
Thompson Equipment Company, with head offices here in Jefferson Parish and four
other plants in La. and Mississippi.
