Received A.B. and A.M. degrees at Ohio Northern University at Ada, Ohio. He was graduated from the Cincinnati Law School in 1891. He practiced law with Daniel R. Crissinger under the firm name of Crissinger and Guthery. He was twice elected Prosecuting Attorney of the county and was a lawyer of prominence throughout the state. In his young manhood he took an active part in politics, going about the country compaigning for current candidates. He was an exceedingly forceful and pleasing speaker. He was for years president of the City National Bank of Marion, Ohio, where he lived and practiced law and was president too of a bank at Forest, Ohio.
