Historical Notes:
(1) John Thomas Nicholas was enrolled in Miller School, a private school for
boys near Charlottesville, 12 September 1880 and continued there until 15 July
1885. He then worked in Richmond for a while but returned home to Albermarle
County because of his father's prolonged illness. He taught school there and
after his father's death he married in 1893. In 1907 he sold the family farm
near Barboursville and brought his growing family, including his mother and
unmarried sister, Cora, to Remington, Virginia. There he continued farming, rand a dairy, shipping cans of raw milk by
4:00 a.m. daily passenger trains to Washington, D.C. During this time he was
also a rural mail carrier, a deacon in the Baptist Church and active in local
affairs. In April 1915 he moved his family to a farm in the Barcroft area of
Arlington County. For this move the womenfolk and small children came by
train. He and the older boys brought all their possessions and livestock by
wagons and leading. This small caravan took three days and two nights enroute
from Remington, a distance of approximately forty miles. He later bought a
farm in a nearby area of Fairfax County known as "Sleepy Hollow," now a well
known designation for comfortable surburban homes. However, this farm was sold
long before its development and a new home was built in the town of Falls
Church where John Thomas Nicholas died in 1930.Until very recently all of his children and many of his grandchildren and
their descendants have remained in teh immediate suburban area of Northern
Virginia. They are engaged in a variety of endeavors such as education, the
trades, civil service, business offices and related skills.
