Historical Notes:
(1) George Sanford Meadows and his wife Elvira, lived in McDowell County, West
Virginia until 1900, when they moved to Meadows Fork in Fayette County. Georve
worked in the coal mines in McDowell and Fayette counties as a prop-setter. He
sold his property in Fayette County in 1907, and moved to Decatur, Tennessee
where he worked as a farm hand for his first cousins Jubal and Juniper Meadows.
George and his family lived in Decatur until 1911 when he heard of land in
Walton County, Florida that could be bought at a cheap price. Once more he
packed their belongings and they boarded a train for Florida. After arriving in Florida, George purchased several acres of property from
a land company. He had to clear off trees to build a house and plant crops.
He earned his income by working as a deck hand aboard a fishing boat on the
Gulf of Mexico.Elvira was expectant with her eighth child when George became ill with
typhoid fever. Although he was very sick and weak he did not stop working. He
had to stop frequently and rest while planting his fields. One day he
collapsed in the field and had to be carried and put to bed. He was the first
to be buried in the cemetery there. Elvira sold the land and moved her family
back to West Virginia. Her baby was born in December, five months after the
death of her husband.
